Author's Note:

This is a third generation battleship built for the Movecraft Plugin. All of it was made entirely by yours truly, and I think I can easily consider this the best airship I've ever made, (and my proudest!) even taking into account the many ships I will upload in the future. All of the redstone devices should work just fine without movecraft.

If you wish to use this in a movecraft server, beware, as it's size exceeds 20k blocks, and thus may cause lag if your computer and/or server aren't meant for this. But it's not impossible.

If you wish to post a refit of this ship or use this ship in any media or server, by all means, feel free; the ship is open to public. All I ask is that you credit me for the build, a simple name mention will
do :)

NOTE: I am well aware that this does not look like the real world's richelieu. it's not meant to. It's simply an airship that bears it's name, as is commun practise with the roleplay it was meant to participate in. The following background is totally fictional as well.

Background:

There has
perhaps never been a more potent symbol of french naval dominance, no greater symbol of french airpower and it's elegance, no greater answer to defiance than the magnificent Richelieu-class Battleships, the pride of the republic's navy.

Having began construction towards the middle of the british-french war, the Richelieu-class was designed as a response to the japanese Amagi and the royal navy's HMA Vanguard, as a modern, heavily armed and armored battleship. The ship was to be armed with enough weapons to deal with any sort of opponent she might come across, from the largest of battleships to the more fast and nimble torpedo boats and light cruisers she might come across. As such, she was the first ship in the fleet to be armed with the new devastating 18 inch guns. A previous model of these guns with a noticeable decrease in firepower and range had been transferred to the Imperial Japanese Navy for work on the new Haruna-class battleships, so Richelieu was to be armed with the newer models. These 18 inch guns carried more firepower and more range than any turret carried by japanese or british battleships of the day, making them an optimal choice to serve as the main armament of the new battleship. As a result of the deal struck with the japanese with the export of the early model of the french 18-inch guns (15 inch for said early model), the Japanese themselves sent out samples and plans for the ventral mounted 14 inch guns which had previously been mounted on the IJN Amagi. Two such turrets comprised the secondary armament of the Richelieu-class, makng it effectively the only french battleship to be equipped with ventral turrets at the time. The original layout called for four 18 inch guns mounted on the dorsal section, and two 14 inch guns on the ventral portion of the ship, with a single scout fighter. However in order to accomodate the complicated Fire control systems and the intended tertiary battery that had been requested, the ship needed more space, or more particularily more length. As such, the length of the ship was increased by an additional 12 meters in order to accomodate a more substantial tertiary battery and the FCS system. The command bridge was made larger to acomodate more advanced communication systems and a better radar, and the remaining empty space was filled by the addition of a single triple heavy torpedo turret, carrying three heavy longarm torpedoes for close quarters ship-to-ship combat. Vessels of the Richelieu-class were the second in the world to be equipped with a tertiary battery, after the venerable HMA Vanguard. The tertiary battery was comprised of three 5.5 inch guns (WSTs), three mounted on each side. these were effecive at hitting were the larger artillery guns could not, and engage light cruisers and torpedo ships that dared to stray close enough to the mighty warship.

Richelieu-class battleships were also given more advanced engines and an overall more efficient powerplant, and whilst the ship was very slow, it could keep up with similarly sized or even smaller battleships or battlecruisers of the time without difficulty, a feature which caused naval historians to argue over whether or not she could be called a Fast Battleship. Her durability was also nothing to be scoffed at; her armor was very heavy, and should the primary bridge be destroyed, the weapons and the ship could easily be controlled from no less than five auxiliary bridges, one of which was a ventral bridge, which was deemed nigh-impenetrable due to it's positionning (another design feature perfected and carried over from Amagi)

Completion of the first Richelieu-class warships took longer than anticipated, as the factory producing the warship's armaments was destroyed by a royal infiltration force. Fortunately for the french, this didn't delay production too much, but did prevent the first warship from taking part in the campaign against the Bismarck as it was intended to. Of all five ships
planned for the class, Richelieu herself was the first to be laid down, later followed by the battleships Jean Bart and Le
Grand Comdé
. Clemenceau suffered from sabotage and had to
be temporarily canceled, and Gascogne finished completion
last, assigned to territorial defense forces as a command ship, and thus seeing minimal action throughout the war. She was however a symbol to the local population.

Richelieu herself was perhaps the most successful ship of the class. She participated in multiple offensive engagements, and quite famously sunk the Admiral-class battlecruisers Grant and Rodney, events which earned her the nickname "Admiral Killer" by friends and foes. She was at the head of multiple devastating campaigns and was considered the pride of the french navy for years. Le Grand Comwas sunken in a struggle against the german Tirpitz, which would later be hunted down by Richelieu, which led the fleet of warships dispatched to sink Tirpitz, a battle which resulted in a clash between the two battleships. Richelieu emerged victorious, after Tirpitz's ventral weapon systems were entirely disabled thank to the help of a submersible warship. Richelieu returned to port in time for repairs, which lasted for weeks. Ultimately, the last Richelieu-class battleships would undergo a great deal of action throughout the conflicts to come, and Richelieu would remain a source of admiration for the nation. Post-war, France's economy was going significantly downhill, and thus it was planned for the venerable Richelieu-class battleships to be scrapped for parts. The population responded by creating movements and associations to gather funds to maintain at least one, which proved successful enough to keep Richelieu herself in service. She would later be moved to the naval reserve, and become one of the centerpieces of the French Defense Fleet.
