The Northrop YF-17 was a prototype lightweight fighter aircraft designed for the USAF's Lightweight Fighter evaluation program. it lost the competition to the F-16, but was selected for the Naval Fighter Attack Experimental program. It was then developed into the McDonnel Douglas F/A-18 Hornet.
