Fast zwei Jahrtausende lang hatte es die größte Kuppel der Welt und es gilt
als eines der am besten erhaltenden Gebäude der Antike, das Pantheon in Rom.
Und das, das ist seine Geschichte.
Ursprünglich wurde zwischen 27 und 25 vor unserer Zeit ein Tempel durch den
Konsul Agrippa errichtet. Durch ein Feuer im Jahr 80 wurde dieser jedoch
teilweise zerstört und so wurde er unter Kaiser Domitian restauriert.
Nur 30 Jahre später brannte der Tempel nach einem Blitzschlag erneut ab und
so wurde das Pantheon durch, so zumindest angenommen, den Architekten
Apollodor von Damaskus errichtet. Vorerst wurde es als Heiligtum für
römische Gottheiten, später als Privatbibliothek genutzt, bis es 609 durch
Papst Bonifatius IV. zu einer Kirche geweiht wurde. Gute 1000 Jahre später
entstand im Auftrag mehrerer Päpste der heutige Vorplatz, der Piazza della
Rotonda. Im 16. Jahrhundert wurde das Pantheon zudem zu einer Grabeskirche,
etliche wohlhabende Römer sind dort bestattet.
Am charakteristischsten für das über 2000 Jahre alte Bauwerk ist die Kuppel,
welche mit ihrer Höhe und ihrem Innendurchmesser von jeweils 43 Metern 30
viele Jahrhunderte lang als die Größte der Welt galt. Diese besteht aus
Ziegeln, Travertin und Tuff, von innen aus Beton der ebenfalls aus Tuff und
Bimsstein besteht. Der Innenraum der Kirche besteht aus vielen
unterschiedlich farbigen Gesteinen, wie zum Beispiel Porphyr, Granit und
gelber Marmor. Wie genau das Pantheon entstanden ist und sich über den Lauf
der Zeit entwickelt hat ist nicht überliefert, Fakt jedoch ist, dass wenn
es nicht von einem römischen Tempel zu einer christlichen Kirche geweiht
worden wäre, hätte es nicht so große Chancen gehabt zwei Jahrtausende zu
überstehen.

For almost two thousand years, its dome remained the biggest in the world.
Today, it still counts as one of the buildings that survived best all the
time up until now: The Pantheon in Rome. And this, this is its story:
Originally, the temple was constructed by consule Agrippa between 27 and 25
B.C.
80 A.C. however, a fire destroyed part of it and it had to be repaired by
Emperor Domtitian. 30 years later, it almost burned down again because of a
lightning strike and so, the Pantheon was constructed upon its ruins by
architect Apollodor from Damascus.
First it was a sanctum for Roman gods, later it was used as a private
library until it was made a church by Pope Bonifatius IV. in the year 609.
About 1000 years later the plaza in front of it was created by the request
of multiple popes - the Piazza della Rotonda. In the 16th century it was
used as a cemetery church where many wealthy romans were buried.
The most characteristical part of the 2000 year old building is its dome
which was said to be the biggest dome of many centuries with its inner
diameter of 43.3 meters. It is made of Bricks, Travertine and Tuff. The
inner walls consist of a concrete that was made out of pumice and tuff
aswell. The inner room is decorated with many colorful stones such as
porphyr, granite and yellow marble.
However, it was not recorded how exactly the Pantheon was built and how
it changed over time... Fact is that if it wasn't renamed a church
instead of a roman temple, it survival chances up until now would not
have been as high as they were.
