Welcome to one of the most accurate recreations of the city of Rome in Minecraft. It is shown as it may appear at the time of the reign of Valentinian III (5th Century AD). The scale we are following is 1 block:1 meter.

It has been built by a friend of mine (Heraclius) and me, since June 2012, using Minarecraftorum resourcepack, created by me.

We will upload several videos showing big zones of Rome:

- Campus Martius and Vatican: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6EaNQdK6rM
- Forum Romanum, Capitolium and Imperial Fora: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MPc2Kj04qk0
- Colosseum, Palatinus and Circus Maximus: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0MBNrwUG7t0

We have also made a map with the names of almost every singular building and monument we have built.

I've managed to make a zoomable version online, you can see it HERE.

Or alternatively you can download the complete map in two resolutions
[WARNING! VERY LARGE .png files, download and open at your own risk!]:

->[2x2] pixels per block (54MB)

->[4x4] pixels per block (169MB)

And a little gif showing the progression of the construction:

NOTICE:
No person has our permission a priori to repost or reupload this map or a modified version of this map, be it at PlanetMC or any other website.

And for memory's sake...

The thing that triggered it all...

I've seen many builds in 5 years of playing Minecraft but none have taken my breath away quite like this one. Ancient Rome really was a sight to behold and it's incredible that you've given us the opportunity to go back in time and revisit the once great city.
Is it ok if I play it on 1.11.2 (will any blocks go missing)?

How?

by loading it in 1.11.2 and seeing if any blocks are missing, I'd presume
There's something wrong, when I go in the game, half of the blocks are missing. You see the front of the Colosseum, and the rest of it completely chopped off.

Hmmm we'll look into that, but I suspect that is happening because you are not using Minecraft 1.8.7. Still, we were planning to update the map for 1.10.
I changed to 1.8.7, but nothing changed :(

We've updated the map and resource pack to Minecraft 1.10.2. If it still does not work for you, I do not know what the reason might be...
There's one problem: when I was going to put Roma Aeterna in the save files, I saw that the Minecraft launcher was completely updated. I made a configuration for 1.10.2 to put the game file in, but it doesn't show up when I start the game. However, when I do it on the configuration with the latest release, Roma Aeterna does show up. What do I do?

I honestly do not know. It must be a problem at your end, it works perfectly fine for us :/
What I mean is that it only lets me play it on 1.1.12 (newest version), and im scared to play it on that version and find most blocks missing again

Really incredible, insane. This is really a great project. I really enjoyed walking around in this ancient Rome. It thoroughly is the most accurate reproduction of ancient Rome in Minecraft.

One years ago I started to build ancient Rome myself in Minecraft. It took me a lot of time just to complete the Forum Romanum, via Sacra, Amphi Theater, Forum of the imperators an a part of the palatine hill. I have so many questions about how you realised this, for example how to find a map of ancient Rome to position all the buildings. For the Forum Romanum it is quite easy, but for the Palatine hill it was a lot more difficult to find a map and ore pictures how it should have looked like about 500AD.

Well, I can stop building Rome myself I will never top this. Really amazing.

I also Explored the temple of Saturn, because is was used to store the gold, and I found an entrance  to a basement with a portal. :)

P.D.: It seems the only version of the resourcepack for before MC 1.8.7 was for 1.7.2... I don't remember if it works for 1.7.10, but I'll post it anyway

Amazing !
Hi there,

sure an amazing World, but(!) and here it is: i wouldnt say its a Rome 1:1 Replica - its just a fantasy rome and sure not 1:1. i watched over ur city exactly 5 Minutes (began at Circus Maximus to the Colosseum and to Basilika Maxentius - after back to Circus over the Imperial Palace) - and just there in this small location (compare to the whole rome) are so many mistakes which i saw instantly that i started to investigate ..... my result is, it isnt 1:1 or even a replica, just a epic city but thats all....

1. Circus Maximus : At first, the Circus in 5th century Anno Domini like ur Rome is had not 133 width and 630 length, or even at any time. Further at that time, the tribune had 3 rows, the lower one was marmor, the middle stone or opus caementium and the upper one was wooden, but urs is complete wooden and just have 2 rows, even it is provided that after neros fire they rebuilt it in stone/marmor with 3 rows.
And yeah - where are the 7 wooden eggs to show the people which round it is? A magnificant feature, just not there. Also the 7 dolphins from Aggripina just not there.
And i think (not 100% sure here) there were 2 Emperorlodges at this time.

2.The Meta Sudan wasnt 21 width x 21 length or even 20 meters high like urs. where are these measures from if u wanna build 1:1 ?
And at least the water should came out of the top because it should look like the well sweats.

3. Arch of Constantine : Should be 26m x 7m and 21m high. And not 29m x10m - at least it is 21m high. that building still exists right now - and even here was worked with that unaccuracy.

4. The Colosseum: Also here wasnt build 1:1 .... Your Arena (inner part) : 72x42 meter - original : 87x55 meter / the wall of the arena was 5m high, yours is 6,5 .... thats also not even close 1:1

5. Your Colossus of Nero : why is he holding a torch in the left Hand? and why it is a colossus of nero at all? after 68 AD it was sungod sol, and after him changed it Commodus (between 180-191) in to Hercules, after his death it was again a sungod sol statue. in 400-500 AD it wasnt a colossus of nero at all.
And btw. the plinth where the statue stood was only 8 meters width not 16 like urs - so also here was build 2:1 and not 1:1 .... u can see it in rome the ground of the statue is still today there.

6. Your Templum Venus et Romae platform is 160x109 meter (original is 145x100 meter) - the building itself should be 110x53 meter, yours is 112x48 meters.

7. Arch of Titus .... original 14,5m height x 13,5m width x 4,75m / u wont believe but yours is 16m height x 17m width x 9m

8. Your Basilika Maxentius is 89x60 meter - should i here provide also that the measures dont fit?

9. That Horrea Vespasiani of yours, should be _right behind_ and next to Atrium Vestae, like here :
www.roma-antiqua.de/bild?img=karte.jpg&path=/antikes_rom/forum_romanum/karten/&q=Plattner%201904&r=horrea_vespasiani.php&m=1 or here
or here
www.flickr.com/photos/mrjennings/61998653/in/album-1352008/
or in google earth with the ancient rome plugin like here (screenshot from me) :
img5.fotos-hochladen.net/uploads/horreavespasiaqh7nx9v5c2.png

i didnt found any source where the horrea vespasiani isnt right behind Atrium Vestae ... !?!

10. At least what i saw, at the flight back to the Circus over the Imperial Palace .... In ur time Romes Domition hadnt a hippodrome anymore in his part of the Imperial Palace, after 300 AD it was just a garden and even if it still was there, it should be 160x48m and not 77x38m like urs, it isnt even close from 1:1 ....

So u see where my problem is, dont understand me wrong, ur work is really amazing for an _fantasy rome_ for anyone with no experience or who dont want some education worth of it, but thats all.
Like i said, i just flight that small route and found that many faults ... i understand if something cant build in minecraft in small sizes, cos its still minecraft - or that u build every named building parallel to each other instead of diagonal - i understand that really - and that isnt the point. But if u say everything is build 1:1 and a replica ur deceptive the people with no experience - i know the most are even not interested if its really 1:1 or be in of proportions to each other and some buildings not at the place where they should be they just want a roman city ... and for thats its perfect, but not for more.

You should have used google earth with the ancient rome plugin from bernhard frischer (which is also owner of the rome reborn virtualization on youtube) he has the best references of geografic at all.

its like i say i build a Golden Gate Bridge _1:1 replica_ (original 2,737m x 1,280m in san francisco) and mine just have 2700x1000m and is in memphis doesnt means its 1:1 just because not many know where which building really was, not everyone count the meters or is interested in, like in rome.

So my result :
(changed from school notes in x/10 - 10 best)

For the work : 9+
Texture Pack, Virtual Map and so on : 8+
Education worth : 2
Investigation : 1
Accuration : 2+

Well of course it is not exactly 1:1, for Heaven's sake, IT'S MINECRAFT.

Many of the the buildings are, as you say, one, two, three blocks off, maybe because of the different decorations on the inside and outside (which makes walls to be 2 blocks thick) , sometimes to preserve some sort of symmetry (e.g. in Venus and Roma, for the gap between each column to be the same) or just because some things cannot be built in diagonal.

Also, we built this just for love of Roman art and history, we tried to build it to our best capacity, and certainly we were not trying to deceive anybody.

PS. I don't quite understand your "result". Are they marks over 10...? Something else...?
PSS: Honestly, I don't know where do you see wood on the Circus Maximus....
That it is or should be exactly 1:1 isnt the point like i said in my post before. More than that or what my problem is, that it isnt even nearly accurate or even 1:1.

or if i should quote you :

"Welcome to one of the most accurate recreations of the city of Rome in Minecraft."

ehm nope! it isnt that accurate like u wanna tell me (us).

You know, there is a small difference between exactly and fantasy without accuracy.

Quote:
"Many of the the buildings are, as you say, one, two, three blocks off,
maybe because of the different decorations on the inside and outside
(which makes walls to be 2 blocks thick)"

i did say many? i took one small round on palatin and i say EVERY building which i investigate. And one, two, three blocks off? Sorry should i tell u again the original measures and yours? i see differences _up to_ 90 yes ninty meters (point 10) or at least mostly up to 20m meters - the bigger the building - that more the difference between original and yours. And normally i didnt count outside decorations and add them to the numbers.

but ok, if its the problem like u say with walls which are 2 blocks thick as example, how many walls has the meta sudan for example that u build the pool 5 meter (16m original - yours 21m is 5m difference which is nearly 30%) bigger as it should be????? sorry that argument of yours maybe fit for some few examples but not for all.

if i find some time on weekend, i will make a second round on your city, a bigger one as before, and will post my results here. But i can gamble my left egg for it, that i doesnt find even one "bigger" named building which is really build 1:1 with all features to that time of yours.

and btw im not only criticized the "some" more meters point. also that buildings are build wrong for this time, or shouldnt be there in that form and and and....

quote :
"or just because some things cannot be built in diagonal."

like i also said before, that is absolutely understandable and it isnt the point. and is uncritically. i didnt criticize that your city isnt diagonal, because that is minecraft. And not like u said build with unaccuracy and blame later minecraft for it.

i repeat, your fantasy rome as build is amazing and my full respect for the time and work.
i wouldnt had say a word at all, but as i come here and saw things like :

"most accurate, replica, 1:1 and 1 block 1 meter" i just was curios, here is nothing, yeah _nothing_ really 1:1 even with or without decorations.
Or more worse than this; that wasnt build 1:1 is the fact that so nearly of every building the proportions are doesnt fit anymore which even more destroys that 1:1 thing.

-> PS : Changed it from school notes to points x/10.
-> PSS : Yeah looked from far away like wood, its sandstone, but that doesnt make the thing better. Still marmor, stone and wood should it be on 3 rows. but thats just still one point of many.

Honestly this is undoubtedly the most accurate recreation of Rome in minecraft. That doesn't mean it is SUPER accurate, but for most purposes it is good enough. I find the build absolutely mindblowing. It is strikingly wast, it has a ton of details all over, and it must have taken so much patience and passion to carry out. In addition we have this thing in all recreations as well as artworks that's called "artistic freedom" and as MolochBaal said previously, theh did this project because of their interest in roman art and culture.

Honestly, your criticism is very harsh, and doesn't do this magnificent piece of work justice.

You are picking at straws man. As someone who does some recreations, it is extremely difficult to do exact 1:1 replicas as minecraft blocks being about one meter makes it almost impossible. I would completely disagree with you that there is anything deceiving in their description. I would also agree with Molochbaals description of this being the most accurate Rome reconstruction ever built. Of course some small details will be off, because of block sizes, not being able to do diagonals and various other reasons. Still, it is an amazing reconstruction and comes very close to what we know about Ancient Rome, even if it is not an exact replica, which would of course be impossible.

Well done guys, glad we finally have a download. It is an amazing recreation and a great project. I have been watching you build it since I joined PMC and am glad you guys finished! Don't let a doubter rain on your glorious project!

Me and my friends are really into both Greek and Roman stuff and I was wondering if i could use this map for my server giving you 100% credit like saying you built it but we are having the map with your premission if so as like a hub for people to explore and likely once I get the server up and citizens to have lore based quests with theme quest givers. I have ran mc servers for 4 years and quit for like 6months I think this map would be the kicker to get me hooked again but please could I have your premission to use it on a server if not then its ok I understand and have a good day nevertheless!

I'd really love to see this... this looks amazing!! Congratulations to both of you... I hope that you can either release the save or open a server even just for a short time...

My head is kind of swimming trying to guess at how you got this scale of a build started... I am doing something similar but run into problems like doing "accurate" measurements when all you've got is 1m blocks. Getting the DEM info hasn't been hard but terraforming has been a little challenging.... I guess it just takes a while.
