- Der Anfang einer neuen Ära-
  • Mit dem Aufschwung in der Schifffahrt, nahm neben der Sambesia ihre
    Schwester die Namibia von 1908 ebenso an dem Konkurrenzkampf auf dem
    Nordatlantik Teil zwischen den jeweiligen Mächten wie der Hapag
    oder der Cunard Line

  • Um Stärke zu zeigen und Führungskraft der Reedereien, entschloss man
    sich für diese zwei so besonderen Schiffe. Für ein ausgewogenen
    Service der neuen Komfort Bot und regelrechten Linienverkehr wurde
    die Namibia in Dienste der DST. Line gestellt

  • Neben der Sambesia ragte ein zweite Koloss aus der Helling heraus. Blohm &
    Voss waren engste Vertraute der Deutschen Südafrika Transatlanik
    Linie und zudem auch vieler Deutscher Reeder waren erfreut über die
    Qualitäten.

  • Mit einer Länge von 166 metern wurden die zwei Neuen Schiffe der Werft
    Blohm & Voss Hamburg 1905 in Auftrag gegeben.

  • Die Namibia wurde um einiges eher Fertig als die Bauzeit ihrer
    Schwester.

  • Im November 1905 begann die Kiel Legung.

  • Ihr Name bezog sich auf die Kolonie Deutsch-Südwestafrika hinaus die
    auch durch die Wüste Namib, die Sprache der Namas, bekannt ist.

  • Der Stapellauf fand am 21 März 1906 statt

  • Die Fertigstellung erfolgte im Mai 1908


    - In Dienst Stellung 1908 -
    • Die Jungfernfahrt fand am 31 Juli 1908 statt.
    • Den Ruhm des neuen Schiffes nahm sie nicht mehr so ein wie die Sambesia
      allerdings war sie sehr begehrt bei Reisenden insbesondere der
      höheren Klasse da sie auch ein Schwimmbecken im unteren Teil des
      Schiffes bereit stellte.

    • Sie fuhr bis zum Ausbruch des ersten Weltkrieges schwarze Zahlen und war
      sehr begehrt auch bei den Auswanderern der Zeit.
    - Kriegs Ende 1918 -
    • Sie Überstand den Krieg und war eines der verbleibenden Schiffe der
      Reederei. Die Triple Entente übernahm bliesen es Anfangs dabei, da
      das Schiff nicht mehr in einem Guten Zustand sich befand.

    • Ab der Weimarer Republik und dem Neuanfang nach dem Krieg war sie und
      der Neubau Oranje die größten Schiffe die die Reederei noch besaß.
    - 20er Jahre -
    • In den 20ern ab ungefähr 1922 verlief der Dienst schleppend, das
      Schiff war schon alt die Klassen waren überholt und es schwankte
      zwischen Roten und Schwarzen Zahlen immer mehr.
    • Am 23 August 1923 auf der Position N, 43 ° 1 | W, 42 ° 21 um 20:53
      Uhr brach ein Feuer aus, nahe der Mannschaftskombüse im untersten
      E-Deck.
    • Das Feuer breitete sich im ganzen Schiff aus das auch die Kessel- und
      Maschinenräume betraf. Eine Kesselexplosion machte sich gegen 21:33
      Uhr breit.
    • Der erste Schornstein fiel ins Wasser und beschädigte ein Großteil des
      Vorderen Schiffes. Nach etwas mehr als einer dreiviertel stunde
      schob sich der Schiffskoloss in den Tiefen des Kalten Ozeans hinein
      und zog abertausende in seinen Sog.

    • Tausende Menschen verlieren ihr leben da eine großes Chaos an Bord ausbrach
      und die Zeit für die Rettungsboote fehlte.

    • Ein Funkspruch konnte noch abgesendet werden der allerdings kurz vor
      ende des Vollständigen Untergangs Empfang werden konnte.

    • Ein Französischer Dampfer und somit das einzige Schiff in nächster
      Nähe war gerade mal 132 Seemeilen von der verunglückten Stelle
      entfernt.

    • Gegen 5:04 Uhr morgens traf das Rettende Schiff ein und sammelte die
      überlebenden auf.

    - The beginning of a new era -

    • With the rise in shipping, in addition to the Sambesia, her sister

      because it also provided a swimming pool in the lower part of the
      ship.

    • She drove black figures until the outbreak of the First World War and
      was very sought after by the emigrants of the time.
    - The Great War -
    • A great war broke out of what later became known as the First World
      War, many ships of those powers were conscripted for military and
      civil service by the States, especially Namibia.

    • She was initially launched and from 1917 served briefly as an auxiliary
      cruiser due to the loss of other ships.

    - End of the war 1918 -
    • She survived the war and was one of the remaining ships of the shipping
      company. The Triple Entente took over at first because the ship was
      no longer in good condition.
    • From the Weimar Republic and the new beginning after the war, she and the
      Neubau Oranje were the largest ships still owned by the shipping
      company.
    - 20s -
    • In the 1920s from about 1922 the service was slow, the ship was already
      old, the classes were outdated and it fluctuated more and more
      between red and black numbers.
    • On 23 August 1923 at position N, 43 ° 1 . W, 42 ° 21 at 20:53 a fire
      broke out, near the crew compartment in the lower e-deck.
    • The fire spread throughout the ship, which also affected the boiler and
      engine rooms. A boiler explosion occurred at about 9:33 p. m.

    • The first chimney fell into the water, damaging much of the front nave.
      After a little more than three-quarters of an hour, the ship's
      colossus slid into the depths of the cold ocean, drawing thousands
      into its wake.

    • Thousands of people lost their lives as chaos broke out on board and there was
      no time for lifeboats to arrive.

    • A radio message could still be sent, but it was received shortly
      before the end of the complete destruction.

    • A French steamer, the only ship in the vicinity, was just 132 nautical
      miles from the crash site.

    • Around 5:04 a. m. , the rescue ship arrived and picked up the survivors.
