In the early 1930s, times were changing, and as the world slowly lifted out of the great depression it was not like the world left behind. Ships had to be replaced, or, in this case, some very old ships had to be replaced. Built during the depression it gave jobs to those who didn't have them, but most of all, it built american pride where there was none. Matsonia ordered three ships, and the second of these was the Lurline. She served faithfully, and among her many roles, none are remembered more or as fondly as that of the RHMS Ellinis. In the early 1960s, Chandris had two ships, the Britanny and the Patris. But, Britanny had caught fire during a period in which she was dry docked, and her hulk had to be scrapped. This caused the already in-need-of-a-third-ship Chandris to seek out an immediate replacement, and found the Lurline, which he promptly bought and refitted extensively, into the Ellinis. She, like her sister, the RHMS Britanis, would serve faithfully until her end. In the 1970s, when Chandris laid up and put on sale 7 of their ships, she was within that group, but nobody wanted her... Until 1987. So she set off, by tug, to be beached at Alang in India, where she was broken up... but not before Chandris ripped out valuables to be used in her still-going sister, the Britanis. Some of those bits of machinery were actually from the first ship of the class of three, the Mariposa, which Chandris had bought engine pieces from after Ellinis suffered engine failure.
