Roman Mint + Download

This is a recreation of a Roman mint, or a Roman treasury complex. I was inspired by the neoclassical buildings in Washington, DC -- a city I often visit. Roman mints were the primary storehouses for state or Senate wealth. There were several reported mints throughout Rome and surrounding towns in order to produce and store coinage. Emperors, when coming to power, often first sought the absolute favor of the Roman mint before anything else so that Roman coinage could be reproduced with their faces on them. Roman coinage was ultimately a symbol of political and economic power, as Rome mandated the standardization of State-produced coinage throughout the empire and across all markets.

This recreation of a Roman mint features four portico entrances: two primary and two secondary. The layout forms a cross, with the primary entrances possessing a double prostyle in antis layout, meaning four columns on either side entrapped by cella walls. The secondary entrances also act as wings and possess a diastyle in antis layout with two columns entrapped by cella walls on either side of the main chamber.

The interior is very bland, but the rooms are properly laid out. I wanted to leave them fairly empty as I felt too much interior detailing is unnecessary and prevents personal customization of the building.
