Is this impractical?
Yes. But it looks cool.

Can it go down?
Yes! The sticky-piston will need to be on the bottom. The second (V2) version showcases a design that can travel both up and down, but needs to be updated so fast that enetites will fall through. Make sure to check out the second (V2) version that offers a simple solution to this.

How high can it go?
A single unit is limited to the push power for a piston, which is 12 blocks. However, in the first (V1) version, you can extend the height by adding more units to the side.

Can it go faster?
Yes? The third (V3) version is the fastest I was able to get it to go. In the second (V2) version the end of the video showcases the fastest you can get the redstone to update, but it moves too fast to move a player up (but it works going down).
