Named after the Roman fort "Castra Regina" which grew over the centuries and became the German city we know today as Regensburg, SS Castra Regina was launched in 1931, and, while she's neither one of the biggest nor one of the most luxurious ships of her time, she still has anything and everything one could wish for.
While she would also serve on the Atlantic between Hamburg and New York City, her main purpose was to serve on the South America route, which one can see when looking at her many awnings on deck, which give her passengers much-needed shade under the tropical sun.
She was also built to attract foreign passengers, as she offers quite a few amenities that weren't very popular on German ships of her time, such as the first class indoor squash court and tennis courts on deck for all 3 classes. She later on became a hospital ship in WW2, after which she was given to the USA as a war reparation.
Though, like with many other ships, the US did not manage to run profits with her, so she eventually ended up rosting away in a dock. When RCL finally financially recovered in the 50s, they bought her back and completely modernised and overhauled her to become one of their first attempts to take part on the now developing cruise market.
