We all go through a Minecraft pixel art stage at some point, don’t we?
Perhaps you built your own skin? Or your favourite character from another game?
In 2013 I got the Minecraft pixel art itch 🎨
I wanted to build something big.
Really big, and really retro. A whole world-sized map big 🌍
And the idea for Super Blockio World was born.

It took a while to find reasonable images of the original Super Mario World maps.
And then hours of work to clean them up, pixel by pixel, fixing hundreds of colour errors and inconsistencies.
After all that of course, it was really easy 😁
Find a friend just as crazy dedicated as me.
Then simply place a few hundred thousand blocks with pixel-perfect accuracy! 🧱
We got part of the way through. But then life happened, and we didn't get to finish in 2013...

But that’s only half the story 📖
Fast forward seven years to 2020...
I got out of hospital after almost dying to Covid and wanted a project to do in my early recovery.
I reached out, and T3hMuffinz answered the call again 📲
We went back to Super Blockio World. This time with extra shades of grey and green 🟩 #ThanksMojang
And 40 livestreams, over 200 hours of building, and about 500,000 blocks later. We finished.

I hope you enjoy exploring this world as much as we enjoyed building it.
Perhaps it'll inspire you to create and share some pixel art of your own 💡
Can you find the hidden workshop area where we made our colour choices...?

Thanks to...
T3hMuffinz - who was super crazy cool enough to "just want to build cool things” with me. And for enduring my never-ending stream of British idiosyncrasies that littered our conversations, willy-nilly, while we were building.
SLiPCoR - without him the awesome timelapse video wouldn’t have been made. He spent time combing through over 100 hours of building footage for some cool snippets to show. Huge thanks to SLiPCoR for making the video while I've been ill and offline.
Smooth McGroove - whose incredible acapella of the Super Mario World theme fits the timelapse video that SLiPCoR edited amazingly well. It feels like 2 pieces of a puzzle, perfectly notched together. Thanks Smooth for taking a couple of hours to explore the map and see it all first hand. I had a blast chatting and learning from each other.
Nodecraft - who helped provide a Minecraft server for the building process. Nodecraft are good people. I believe in them, their vision, and the work they do for their players. If you need a Minecraft server, I recommend you try them. Use code ‘Blocks’ for 30% off.
