The Eastemnet
"The dwellings of the Rohirrim were for the most part many leagues away to the South, under the wooded eaves of the White Mountains, now hidden in mist and cloud; yet the Horse-lords had formerly kept many herds and studs in the Eastemnet, this easterly region of their realm, and there the herdsmen had wandered much, living in camp and tent, even in winter-time. But now all the land was empty, and there was silence that did not seem to be the quiet of peace."
- The Lord of the Rings, Book III, Chapter II, 'The Riders of Rohan'
Lore
The Eastemnet was a part of Rohan, and an area of wide, grassy plains found east of the river Entwash, between it and the Great River Anduin.
The region was bordered by the lands of Anórien in the southeast, the Emyn Muil in the east, the Wold in the north and northeast, and the river Entwash to the west.
There were no fixed settlements here, but many of the herdsmen of the Rohirrim lived a nomadic existence on the fields of the Eastemnet, living out of temporary camps and driving their herds across the grasslands. They would drive their herds south to the more inhabitated lands occasionally, to sell them for slaughter.
By the time of the War of the Ring, however, owing to the threat of Mordor from the east, the Eastemnet was emptied by the command of Éomer As such, when Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli pursued the Uruk-hai over the Eastemnet, they found only wide, empty grasslands.
The name 'Eastemnet', means 'Eastern plain', from the Old English emnet, meaning plain or level ground.
Construction
The terrain itself was made in WorldPainter, and had various custom plants from the Conquest Reforged mod added to it in the process. Once complete, the camps and fort were built on the landscape.
The tents of the nomads were primarily inspired by Mongolian-style gers - a style perfectly suited to the difficulties of nomadic life. Once their design was finalised, it was fairly simple to then build a series of eight camps scattered across the grasslands.
The Eastemnet forms part of a larger project which seeks to recreate Middle-earth in its entirety. Credit goes to NikeBisou for leading this project, and to the entire community of builders for leading all the projects therein.
The Eastemnet can be viewed from above on ArdaCraft's dynmap. There is no download avaliable, but ArdaCraft is a non-whitelisted server which anyone is welcome to come and explore, provided they have installed our modpack first.
