TYPE 44A/B Space Frigate:
Built from spare components of civilian ships, the Type 44 may not be the best looking or most capable ship but it has something even more important: a low price-tag. At a time when military budgets were stretched thin being able to build 48 new frigates in short order for the low price of a mere $1bn each was quite the steal. The series marks the first space warship program sponsored by the UN and not an individual nation. They were built in direct response to the emergence of piracy in the inner asteroid belt and after various calls from member states for the UN Security Council to take action against the increasing threat.
Model A would sport a massive BD Systems Longbow 500mm coil gun originally designed for intercepting small asteroids above Luna, a role which it could still fulfill if needed. During normal operations it would primarily fire canister shot against larger pirate flotillas or stationary asteroid bases. On rare occasions using solid slugs to crater or even completely crack an asteroid, destroying any pirate facilities in the process. Due to their specific combat roll the model A rarely saw direct combat, instead favoring first strike and defensive engagements.
Model B was designed as a missile boat with two NGAL/5 missile pods mounted in place of the A model’s cannon. Each pod contained 40 medium range missiles that were capable of destroying most vessels with a single hit and intercepting incoming projectiles. In addition a further two BD Systems V50 laser defense pods would be mounted on the sides of the rear most missile pod. Their greater defensive armament model B was considered far more suitable for engagements where resistance was expected. The vessels performed poorly in extreme close range engagements with combatants armed with ballistic weapons, though these situations rarely if ever occurred.
Designs for the two models were completed in 2136 with work starting above Earth in 2138. Two RAI Aerospace orbital docks were able to turn out one ship a month, with the entire series being completed in a little over two years. Each ship bears the name of an off world settlement or station, with such names as New Olympia, Vartan City, Borman, and Labrynth becoming well known among these settlers. These simple but venerable ships would serve into the latter half of the 22nd century but would be phased out as frontline units in favor of much faster direct fusion drive ships. Still they would see use as picket and privet security vessels well into the next century. Almost all of the A models would be used as orbital defense platforms above Luna and other earth colonies.
