The USS Constellation was destroyed by being piloted by Captain Kirk into a planet-eating doomsday machine from a distant galaxy. The crew perished on one of the planets destroyed, and the captain of the Constellation died aboard a shuttle craft flown into the doomsday machine. This is a refit of a constitution-class heavy cruiser named after the ship that saved the galaxy.
