This is the second ship I’ve posted today the first being HMS BRITANNIA but this ship in nearly 200 years older by comparing Britannia and the vasa you get a great feel for how much shipbuilding changed during those centuries
The vasa is a 64 gun royal ship as they were called in Sweden at the time and much like Britannia she was built to be the figure head of the nation and she was built to one of the most powerful ships in the world but during her construction several of her engineers died and she was changed several times after her keel was laid resulting in her being to high and narrow for her length but despite this she set sail in 1628 and was passing a fort and opened all of her gunports to do a salute and a gust of wind came and violently rocked the ship and then a second stronger gust came and tipped her over so far water came into her gun ports and sunk her
she sat at the bottom of the harbour for nearly 300 years and in the 1960s she was refound and raised now she sits in a museum in Stockholm Sweden
