Inspiration
I gained a fascination towards postmodern buildings, particularly those from the 80s, as well as neo-deco elements. The main source of inspiration derived from the Comerica Bank Tower in downtown Dallas, TX, designed by Philip Johnson. Myself being a Dallas native, I've always loved the Dallas skyline, but this building in particular really stood out to me. Sticking with this theme, I attempted to create a complex of buildings that compliment each other. I also incorporated ideas of actual properties such as Brookfield Place and the pre-9/11 World Trade Center complex. From WTC, for example, I re-styled one of the low-rise buildings as well as created a similar concourse galleria under the plaza. Overall, I tried to make the whole complex as coherent as possible in the way things relate to one another, and with my own personal touches that hopefully yield some originality.
Building Process
I started with 1 WFC by laying out support columns and establishing the core. I then worked my way around that with the whole facade in correspondence with the actual building I was using as inspiration. Once the first couple floors of interiors were completed, I proceeded to make the outer shells of the other buildings, but they were in completely different positions then they are now. That's where MCEdit comes in, which is what I used to extensively move and rotate things around until I was somewhat pleased with how the buildings were generally positioned. As for the plaza and decorative elements, the two types of trees are hand-made and then copied about. The pavement of the plaza was carefully thought out and some elements were flipped to display symmetry about the central tower.
