The complexity of many systems critical for frequent short and long-distance spaceflight has naturally led to personal starships for civilian use being relatively uncommon in TAUFOG territories. Even a limited FTL drive takes up a significant percentage of a small ship's volume, both the main drive itself and the needed inertial control, shielding, and navigation systems which allow a vessel to move through darkspace safely. Personal starships thus have largely remained an item for enthusiasts, or upper and high middle class individuals. In the mid 48,800s, Kualin Stardrives sought to encourage the relatively small personal starship market with a line of more affordable designs. The company's ambitions were helped by the ongoing Shadow Fleet Crisis, which had seen widespread infrastructure damage across Ivesceel, reducing confidence in the existing systems of interplanetary public transportation. The potential for a Shadow Fleet attack at any time also added to the increase in individuals seeking their own means to travel from system to system, or evacuate during a crisis. The Nestan Z-1355 was one of the starship models made by Kualin Stardrives during this period, specifically engineered for durability and performance over style and luxury. The standard Nestan Z-1355 model contained only a single seat for the pilot, with other designs taking on the function of a family transport. The Nestan also lacked many of the comforts of larger and more expensive vessels; although the ship did have a refresher, it was placed in a cramped compartment behind the cockpit which could only be accessed by awkwardly crawling over the seat when reclined, and its proximity to the Nestan's drive system and reactor resulted in a cramped, uncomfortable, and loud experience when used. What the Nestan lacked in comforts, it made up for with its durability and range. The Nestan Z-1355 was equipped with Kuao-Petanisem alloy hull plating, rated for direct high-energy micro particle collisions or low-velocity debris strikes, and also had redundant deflector and concussion shield projectors. Although not as powerful as military-grade shielding systems, the Nestan's shields gave it significantly more survivability when traveling through space, particularly in more remote or damaged regions. The Nestan also had a rating 1.1.14 darkspace drive with a cruising speed of 4.5 million c, much faster than any existing single-seater personal starship and even fast enough to outpace some military strike craft and capital ships. Paired with a large fuel tank, this allowed the Nestan to easily traverse the entirety of TAUFOG-occupied territory in Ivesceel, giving the owner a great degree of mobility and freedom. The Nestan was very popular among the upper-middle class, those with enough income to afford such a ship but who could also make use of quick transportation for business. The vessel was also purchased by some governments and corporations for employees to use if necessary, although typically a company shuttle would be more appropriate.
