The Texturepack You Need: Secret of Mana by Brainader
You need Brainader's texturepack to read hints from paintings. It's the texturepack the world was designed to use.

A Mod You Need: Creepers by pitman-87
You need this mod, (or one like it,) so that creepers don't blow up blocks that you need to figure out secrets.

Installation:
Just extract the zip file into "saves" in your .minecraft folder.
