Zerynthia Arthrocology

Hello all! Part three of the duo contest entry... sure. As usual for my yearly summer contest entries, I put in a huge amount of planning and effort to make this bigger-than-genesis-turtle butterfly city complete with major organics overhaul, infrastructure planning and plenty of jukebox music. Do note that its context is a sequel to the story Hero, so do check that out too, and for the worrying sake of music licensing, I would have to remove some adfly links to your own convenience. As usual, due to time constraint and pretty poor planning, I couldn't add more features than I would have, but it's still strikingly complex enough. Enjoy!

FUN FACT: Although all butterflies do have six legs, the largest family of butterflies called the Nymphalidae are known to stand on only four feet instead of all six as its fore limbs are held up against the body; it's only as useful as our own appendices. There was no space to put even one leg on this butterfly...

EDIT: Woot, third place: personal highest ranking building solo alongside teams in a project contest! Thanks guys for all the great support for this vacation project! Now since the contest is over I will freely release the Youtube links for easier jukebox listening.

Mods and programs used:
MCEdit 1.5.3 and 2.0 alpha
WorldPainter for template export
Voxelsniper and WorldEdit through personal premade 1.9 Bukkit server for organics
Sketchup Make for butterfly model reference
Optifine for performance (interface and texture effects omitted from pictures)
Chunky render
Paint.NET for template making and render edits

City Overall Features
Overall Features
Countryside-like city on top of quadruple-pair winged butterfly (design based on actual species Zerynthia Rumina)
Two districts on each wing comprising of several residences, guild structures (details below) and some unique biomes; classified by fundamental shape of leaf (chestnut district make up circular houses, maple roughly makes up falicate houses etc)
Wing vein pattern comprised of branching triple-helical wooden skeleton, water and aura pipelines connected to thorax source (shown on wire map)

Transport highways inside helical skeleton with two linear transport loops on upper and lower front wings, single loop on upper hind wings and noose loop on lower hind wings.
City dotted with white or colour-coded landing pads for aerial transportation
Transport executed by four stages of minor arthropods: cartepillars, medflies, loadflies and forceflies.
Cartepillars: Passenger tram travelling on highways
Medflies: Executive passenger, rescue and light cargo aerial transport
Loadflies: Heavy cargo aerial transport
Forceflies: Military fighter and heavy army/cargo aerial transport

Occasional distribution of waste bins for trash collection by loadflies and pulverisation into compost to be pumped to the rest of the butterfly via the skeletal branches

Zone maps below:
Purple - Aura pipeline
Blue - Water pipeline
Green - Transport line

Background Story
He was more of a scholar or a librarian than a missionary... In the inherited hovel I called home, he kept many journals, makeshift volumes and neo-hieroglyphic documents about the Etherealm from which I browsed for answers and interesting concepts to pass the time. Some proved difficult to comprehend since he was no longer there to explain them clearly, even the "basic laws" of the Etherealm like something called the aura.

In all of the three realms including this and our dimension, there is always the greatest form of underlying power believed to have founded each dimensional space. In our dimension, we called it "dark energy". In the upper Etherealm however, it is an interactive power they call the "aura" - a sentient force that transforms into and back from any of our known energy species: chemical, electrical, potential etc. The best part of it is that any intelligent being can call upon it and transmit it like prayers of intercession to empower others or their own physical and mental abilities. According to the locals I would meet, it would just be either a matter of large popularity, existential faith or transformation technicality to harness this aura.

There were also notes of observed celestial factions, including the Valkyrie whose lands we've invaded and who are hunting me down. Even now as I read, there lingered fear of them attacking the hovel at full force any minute, so home would have to be migrated somewhere else.

As I went through the Nymph faction folder, I found a crumpled brochure to a cruiser called Zerynthia. I had obscure visions of Steve aboard a massive turtle, but this picture of a double winged butterfly had shown landscapes and districts too vast to believe that such a creature existed.

Welcome newcomers and tourists to Zerynthia, the Salika's first commercial arthrocology! Aboard one of the largest fleet of cruiser butterflies lies a hub of opportunity, harmony and adventure in constant motion. Our aim is to serve inhabitants both visiting and permanent alike as well as to inspire functional beauty and unity. Sailing to all major faction homeworlds below; don't miss the chance!

Longitude Salika Galaxies - Chorus
Latitude Salika Galaxies - Labyrinth
Ragnarok Empire - Asgard
Magisterium - Mageddon
Shinigami Empire - Tien

If I could sneak into Zerynthia, I wouldn't have to worry about the Valkyrie chasing me anymore, but sneaking into Asgard is another issue. I would have to postpone that adventure for later; I need better preparation and a way to get there unnoticed.

it's a play on words, people do it all the time xP
Arthro- is derived from arthropod or the latin word for "jointed", -cology is from ecology which is anything concerning the protection of the environment. Alternatively it's my own word to replace "arcology" (any architectural concept with ecological focus)

I can think this could be a great adventure or multiplayer map. Like a skyblock but instead on a boring small landmass, you are on the butterfly... Then maybe we will see people building even more details on it. :]

Eh......Like I only use the most basic renders for my stuff, and I highly doubt a simple 'aeronautical' builder would be suited for it anyways. Thanks for the encouragement, I guess
 • Art Dei Tech

 • August 26, 2016, 1:28 am
You could mix things up with aeronautics like what I do nowadays: mixing butterflies with cities. In Minecraft, try not to limit aircraft to their sole function, but other creative uses like this: cities, maybe houses, animal fusions and other wild stuff.

Otherwise if you decide to stick with fundamental aeronautics anyway, try zooming in (enlarge your aircraft builds) to explain details of the cockpit or the engines etc. PMC peeps mainly are attracted to something imaginative so take this comment as a headstart :)
I could do some renders for ya if you like :O

Hi Destiny Gene I'm an editor of China.
I've found your new project
Zerynthia Arthrocology (SC PC)(1.9+)
It's really a nice job.
Therefore I'm here to ask if I could repost your project to our website MCBBS:www.mcbbs.net/forum.php.
However, due to the fact that our country has blocked a lot of foreign websites.
So could you allow us create a new Chinese downlink.
I will list your name and the original website clearly.
