The 17th Light Dragoons were one of only three regular Dragoon Regiments in America during the American Revolution. Distinguished and feared by their terrifying skull and crossbones helmet, they performed several scowerings of New York and Long Island for Patriot sympathizers and hidden rebel factions.A 1910 artists depiction of the 17th by Charles MacKubin Lefferts, Courtesy of the New York Historic Society
