Once upon a time there was a little girl named Emily. It was her birthday today, and as per her family's tradition, Emily was allowed to pick one toy from the toy shop. So, that morning, Emily and her mother set out for the store, happy and excited.
When they got to the store, Emily immediately went to look at the dolls. There were hundreds to choose from, but Emily spotted hers right away. It was a hand-knit, red-haired doll with a beautifully embroidered purple dress, and two fingers up, making the 'peace' sign. She thought this was fantastic, and she ran to the cash register, where her mother was waiting, and said, "This is the one I want."
The cashier, an old man who had worked there his whole life, shook his head.
"You cannot have that doll. There are plenty of others to choose from," he said.
"But this is the one I want. It's my birthday, and I get to choose!" yelled Emily, confused.
"I beg you, please. You must not have that doll."
"I must have it! I want it!"
The cashier sighed, and nodded, carefully eyeing the peace sign. "In that case, you must follow three rules. First, you must never hold the doll. Second, you must never sleep near the doll. And third, you must never, ever, let the doll out of your sight."
Convinced that this was the doll for her, Emily nodded and bought it. She loved her doll very much, and for the next three days she was very careful to obey the man's rules. That is, until the fourth night. That night, Emily decided she wanted to sleep with the doll, as many children do. She tucked the doll in next to her, and went to sleep.
In the middle of the night, Emily awoke to the sound of something scratching on the floor. She realized the doll was missing, and tried to get up, only to find her hands and feet tied to the bed. See, because she had broken the man's rules, the doll came alive, and was evil. The doll went downstairs to the kitchen and grabbed the largest, sharpest knife in the cabinet.
It went into Emily's parents' room, chanting, "Emily, Emily, Emily! I'm going to kill your parents!" It stabbed them in the stomach, then left.
It then went into her brother's room, chanting, "Emily, Emily, Emily! I'm going to kill your brother!" It sliced his throat, then left.
Emily heard the footsteps approaching her door, and struggled to get free, but hope was lost. The doll came into the room and chanted, "Emily, Emily, Emily! I'm going to kill YOU!" And the doll cut her open, so that blood and guts spilled all over the room.
The police arrived later, responding to calls from worried neighbors. They surveyed the house and found the family's blood everywhere. The worst was in Emily's room, where she was torn nearly in two. The only spot not covered in blood was the corner, where a raggedy doll was holding up three fingers and smiling.
It is said that to this day one can still hear in the house the sound of chanting, "Emily, Emily, Emily!"
