Based off the armor of the robots and employees Hyperion Corporation from Borderlands 2.
Hyperion Developed a way to merg Human DNA and Robot engineering using the many uses of slag. In the game upon killing an engineer using elemental damage he occasionally yells, "Nooo, I havent finished my comic book colection!"

Handsome Jack has been testing the effects of slag on the animals of Pandora in the Wildlife Exploitation Reserve. There are some scattered Echoes across the labs that tell the story of Tina's parents being tested on. Flesh Stick the psycho was hired my Hyperion to take humans in for testing. Jack brags about the many uses of slag, but never tels what exactly he is working on.
The tests resulted in death and mutation for a while until the perfect combination of slag and robot circuitry to form the first ever Cyborg. This Cyborg was able to compute like a robot, think like a human, but most dangerously, he had emotions. After a while the cyborg snapped and ripped off Handsome Jack's face. And just like the Joker from Batman, he lies about how he got his face removed!
