Joseph Goebbels
German politician and propagandist, one of the closest associates and loyal followers of Adolf Hitler. A gauleiter in Berlin since 1926 and head of the NSDAP propaganda department since 1930, he made a significant contribution to the rise in popularity of the National Socialists at the final stage of the existence of the Weimar Republic.
From 1933 to 1945, the Minister of Propaganda and president of the Imperial Chamber of Culture, Goebbels concentrated in his hands all the necessary levers of control of the press, radio, cinema and other spheres of German culture. Through a combination of demagogic rhetoric, skillful staging of mass events and the effective use of modern technology — primarily radio and cinema — for propaganda purposes, he managed to indoctrinate broad strata of the German people with the ideas of National Socialism and defame Communists, Social Democrats, Jews and church ministers. In the course of anti-Semitic propaganda and actions such as the November 1938 pogrom, he ideologically prepared the deportation and extermination of Jews and thereby became one of the main ideological inspirers of the Holocaust. His famous speech on total war, which he delivered at the Berlin Sports Palace in February 1943, serves as a clear example of manipulation of mass consciousness.
On April 30 , 1945 , after Hitler's suicide , in accordance with the Fuhrer 's political will , Goebbels replaced him as Reich Chancellor Germany. After being in office for one day, he committed suicide with his wife Magda Goebbels, who previously poisoned their six children.
Goebbels' name has become a household name, he is still associated with cynical shameless propaganda.
