Patient 0 was the first infected host for the croatoan virus epidemic, and became infected after a military bioweapons experiment accidentally got released in an Alaskan town. The town was quarantined after a minor outbreak of the virus turned its citizens feral and cannibalistic, and the town was given a scorched earth policy leaving a lone carrier of the strain who had left before a quarantine was issued. This carrier had gone to visit family in the mainland US in the city of Rochester, Connecticut, where his viral strain became active. He was taken to the hospital where he was placed in the quarantine ward on the 18th floor. This is where he later fell into a coma and then was pronounced dead hours later after doctors thought he was dead. He awoke from this death-like state and began to attack hospital staff infecting them with the virus. These infected became feral and began to do the same until a full scale outbreak had occurred with no one in the hospital being safe. Hours later a government issued quarantine had taken hold with screening stations being set up on the edges of the city, being enforced by military personnel. Panicking citizens rushed these screening stations and the infected were left behind while the healthy were permitted to enter and leave the city.

Infected hosts were either told to leave the area immediately and return to their homes, or were escorted to a laboratory for testing. It is assumed that experiments in finding a cure were conducted there, but most assumed they were really being executed.
