The Picts are a race of savages, one of the most primitive people of the Hyborian age. They live in the wild lands of the west of the continent, huge forest areas that stretch between Cimmeria in the north, Aquilonia in the east and Zingara in the south. Clashes with these neighbors are extremely frequent, and make the Picts a people very badly perceived by most other people of the Hyborian age. Speaking of the relations between Picts and Cimmerians, Conan affirms that "the hatred which separates us is older than the world". Conan serves for more than two years on the Pictish frontier in the Aquilonian army, and carries out a kind of permanent guerrilla warfare with the warriors of the tribes, tracking them in the shade of the woods directly on their territories. They are known to be brutal, they have dark skin, they wear loincloths and moccasins and are covered in war paint. They are divided into several clans linked to a totem animal, they are extremely stealthy and agile, they can remain hidden for hours observing and tracking their enemy. Their faces are motionless, but their narrow eyes glow with the fire that burns in the eyes of a lurking tiger. When a Pict remains motionless, even beasts pass by without noticing it.
