Here's the skin I'm trying to stick to just now. It's based off of an MMO Avatar I had a while back, also the one I'm currently using. Shading advice would be nice.

GIMP is good for shading, but if you use skinedit then i reccomend using novaskin.

PS: "Thanks" for trolling me on buildcraft -_- jk :P

Depending on what program you're using to make your skins, there's various shaders/burn/lighten tools. Generally speaking, you want to make the pixels immediately touching the hairline slightly darker than the others to give off the right 3D feel to it. Same goes for the inside of the arms. Mildly adjusting the RGB sliders can give the right effect in this situation. Lightly burning the skin would give off the right texture as to make it look less formulaic and more realistic. Don't go overboard, test things in small increments and you're good to go.

Thanks Reg. I do have the shader tools as I use SkinEdit whenever I make skins. I'm never really sure WHICH parts to shade though.

Shading clothes tends to eliminate the textures that you put on it, so generally speaking you'll only want to burn the skin or any sort of clothing that doesn't have varying textures. You don't want to make the skin look too busy, at some point more detail makes a skin look like a lot of ideas packed in to one giant mess of a blob, so don't do more than you have to. Make sure not to burn too heavy, you just want slight variation in the skin to give off the image of shadows encasing the face/arms.
