Hello Everyone! I will regularly be updating this blog as we get more and more news on update 1.9, but for now here is what you can expect to see in the next update. Please note that all of these spoilers are from Mojang and no-one else.

General

- On April 1 2015 the 'Love and Hugs' snapshot 15w14a was released. Obviously it was just an April Fools Joke but hidden in the snow textures of this snapshot was a QR code. I'll post the link to this code below but if you don't have a QR code reader then it reads '1.9 The Combat Update'. So it's confirmed! 1.9 will be THE COMBAT UPDATE! http://imgur.com/ZGnqLdy

- The reason 1.8 took so long wasn't only because of the insane number of new features added into the game itself, it was mostly because there were LOADS of internal changes. Now these 'internal changes' are what Mojang are doing to work towards the Plugin API and are therefore great for mod-makers, but for the majority of us who are not mod-makers the following is great news. Searge tweeted that there will be considerably less work on internal changes in 1.9 and instead the update will focus much more on actual in-game additions and changes (as well as bug fixes): https://twitter.com/SeargeDP/status/592614501998034944

Terrain & Structures

- Dinnerbone has been working a lot on the End and how it is generated. Like the overworld and the Nether it will now be infinite (well, 30 mil by 30 mil blocks) and all of that space will be occupied by smaller islands. However to access these smaller islands you need to go through the End gateway or End gateway portal after you have defeated the Enderdragon. The new gateway portal is a bit like having a sub-dimension of the End and exactly the way all that works is still unclear. On these islands new 'Chorus plants' will generate on these islands (see below) and an all new (and huge) End-exclusive generated structure: the 'Ender city dungeon' (probably not it's proper name). These dungeons contain new blocks and a new mob all of which you can read about below.
THIS WAS ANNOUNCED DURING THE UPCOMING FEATURES PANEL AT MINECON 2015, I'LL PUT UP A LINK WHEN A PROPER VIDEO OF THE PANEL IS AVAILABLE.

- As well as all these new islands there are terrain updates to the main island. These include iron bars around the taller ender crystals so that you can shoot them down with a bow and the pillars being neatly arranged in a circular fashion around the end portal. The bedrock and torches will already have spawned when the End is loaded but you must defeat the Enderdragon for the portal blocks and the dragon egg to appear.
THIS WAS ANNOUNCED DURING THE UPCOMING FEATURES PANEL AT MINECON 2015, I'LL PUT UP A LINK WHEN A PROPER VIDEO OF THE PANEL IS AVAILABLE.

- As mentioned above, there is a brand new End-exclusive generated structure and it is huge. It is dubbed the 'Ender city dungeon' although that is probably not it's official name. It is made of new End-exclusive blocks and contains a new End-exclusive mob. It is still unclear what the purpose of these dungeons are.

- Awesome new feature spoiled by Jeb on the 12/5/15. He tweeted about a completely new type of dungeon, apparently with 'blocks and mobs' just like any dungeon but unlike any other dungeon this one will be 'different from other dungeons'. Here's the tweet he sent us: https://twitter.com/jeb_/status/598094215638319104

- Jeb demonstrated in a tweet that 'Working on features sometimes produce surprising behaviours.' with a picture showing lots of messed up generated structures on a superflat world. This suggests that Jeb has probably been working on some other Generated Structure-related features but what it more interesting about this picture he linked is a strange object in the top-right corner which form this distance appears to be made of granite. I doubt this is coincidence but it's nothing obvious either: https://twitter.com/jeb_/status/593712668176965632

Blocks & Items

- On Star Wars Day (May 4th) Dinnerbone revealed what is probably the most exciting, incredible and hype-building screenshot yet! It shows the Combat Update in all its glory with lots of new combat-related items, including shields and many new types of arrow. Nothing's for certain except for the fact that all these amazing new items WILL be in 1.9! Here is the image that a player found while decoding a completely blank and meaningless image tweeted by Dinnerbone: http://i.imgur.com/xEj71Bl.png
There is also a second image showcasing what the new creative inventory will look like what with these new slots:
http://media.dinnerbone.com/uploads/2015-05/screenshots/22_13-41-59_pLPf3BZEtx.png

- More detail was given about these new arrows during Minecon 2015. One of the new arrows will be the 'Spectral Arrow'. Upon shooting a mob/player (even if they are invisible), they will display an outline which will be color-coded if they are in a team. This is relatively technical and it was mentioned that these would be for PvP servers/maps and not for normal survival. All the colored arrows visible in the picture are actually arrows that have been given potion effects, so in 1.9 you will (somehow) be able to apply effects to arrows (both positive and negative ones) which will then give the effect to whatever you shoot.
THIS WAS ANNOUNCED DURING THE UPCOMING FEATURES PANEL AT MINECON 2015, I'LL PUT UP A LINK WHEN A PROPER VIDEO OF THE PANEL IS AVAILABLE.

- The first new block announced for 1.9 is the Dirt Path. This block isn't quite a full block and has a sort of light dirt texture, making excellent for paths, good news for builders out there! Jeb tweeted that he also added it into the MCPE edition. Here is the picture which Jeb tweeted showing the new block: http://imgur.com/iIyy941

- One of several new End-related blocks was shown at the Upcoming Features panel at Minecon 2015. One particularly exciting one if the new 'Chorus plant', a tall, dark-purple-colored, cacti-like plant that drops it's fruit when mined. These 'Chorus Fruit' can be used to make the also new 'Purple blocks' that generate in again, a new generated structure in the End. (More Below) At the top of the plants there are the plant's flowers that can be used to grow more of the plant.

- Also announced in the panel are purple blocks. Their name is currently unknown and seem to serve a purely asthetic purpose. This block will also come in slab, stair and chiseled form. They make the new 'End city dungeons' (not their proper name) that generate in the End.
THIS WAS ANNOUNCED DURING THE UPCOMING FEATURES PANEL AT MINECON 2015, I'LL PUT UP A LINK WHEN A PROPER VIDEO OF THE PANEL IS AVAILABLE.

- Also forming these new generated structures in the End are 'End stone bricks', colored similarly to End Stone but smoother and more brick-like. They also come in slab and stair form.
THIS WAS ANNOUNCED DURING THE UPCOMING FEATURES PANEL AT MINECON 2015, I'LL PUT UP A LINK WHEN A PROPER VIDEO OF THE PANEL IS AVAILABLE.

- Lastly in this new dungeon an unknown block seemingly resembling a white pole was spotted in the video showing the new dungeon. All we know is they can be placed horizontally and vertically and emit particles.
THIS WAS ANNOUNCED DURING THE UPCOMING FEATURES PANEL AT MINECON 2015, I'LL PUT UP A LINK WHEN A PROPER VIDEO OF THE PANEL IS AVAILABLE.

- Next up is another block. I have no idea what it is and neither does anyone else but it was revealed in this mysterious screenshot by SeargeDP and has been described simply as a 'Dark Colored Block': https://twitter.com/SeargeDP/status/578219322373496832

- Yet another mysterious hint at a block. All we know now is that it is a new 'block type' as Jeb so mysteriously hinted at in this tweet. My guess is that he may be adding the much requested prismarine slabs/stairs, but that's just my view and I doubt it's right: https://twitter.com/jeb_/status/572777399063994368

- Quick long-requested update to Ender Pearls. You will now be able to use them in Creative mode as was subtly shown in during the Minecon 2015 panel while Dinnerbone was showing off the new 'End gateway portal'.
THIS WAS ANNOUNCED DURING THE UPCOMING FEATURES PANEL AT MINECON 2015, I'LL PUT UP A LINK WHEN A PROPER VIDEO OF THE PANEL IS AVAILABLE.

- While Jeb was displaying dual wielding at the Upcoming Features panel we saw that the bow inventory sprite will be animated in the same way it doesn when held in your hand. A neat little asthetic feature.

Mobs & Entities

- Jeb shows us a brand new End-exclusive mob known as the 'Skulker' (short for 'Shell Lurker') which will spawn in the new 'Ender city dungeons' (not proper name). Jeb said that this mob is a 'block mob', which looks like a block until they open up to shoot projectiles. These new projectiles (name still unknown) travel along the x/y/z axis and give the player damage and the brand new 'Levitate' effect which can be cool when used correctly, but can be deadly, especially in the these fights. The projectiles can however be relatively easily knocked away.
Jeb also mentioned that the Skulker will have uses with commands which would allow them to be part of a team attack defending a specific player/team of players.

- The Enderdragon attack has recieved a lot of attention from Dinnerbone during the development of 1.9. To quote Dinnerbone the attack will be 'more involved' and won't just be 'breaking a block and then hitting the dragon'. Instead it will be more intricate and the dragon's AI will be smarter. The dragon will now attack players more viciously if they are close to ender portals and doesn't get too far away from the player and stop attacking. His method of attack will also be more similarly to the console edition, this means he will most likely breath 'Ender acid' or as subtly implied by Dinnerbone, 'Dragon/Ender Breath' and shoot purple fireballs.
THIS WAS ANNOUNCED DURING THE UPCOMING FEATURES PANEL AT MINECON 2015, I'LL PUT UP A LINK WHEN A PROPER VIDEO OF THE PANEL IS AVAILABLE.

- If you have already defeated the Enderdragon and want to try out these new attacks then don't worry, it will respawn (optionally) in all pre-1.9 worlds. If you defeat it in 1.9 you will still be able to respawn the dragon by crafting an Ender Crystal or Ender Crystal-like block and placing on top one of the obsidian pillars. Killing a respawned Enderdragon won't give you another dragon egg but it will drop other ingredients notably something to do with the Enderdragon's breath. The specific nature of these new ingredients is yet to be revealed.
THIS WAS ANNOUNCED DURING THE UPCOMING FEATURES PANEL AT MINECON 2015, I'LL PUT UP A LINK WHEN A PROPER VIDEO OF THE PANEL IS AVAILABLE.

- The first proper spoiler was given on 19/1/15! Dinnerbone tweeted the following picture which I assume spoils two features, the first is that there may be multiple boss bars at the same time (as well as a boss bar retexture). The second, and more exicting feature is that there could be an option to take a screenshot and share it (probably via social media) without even having to leave your game! Anyway, enough talking, here's the picture, what do you think its spoiling?: http://media.dinnerbone.com/uploads/2015-01/screenshots/19_14-32-30_OblsU19cfA.png

- In the following tweet it was made clear that Dinnerbone was working on making Skeletons have an actual animation when shooting arrows the same way players do, certainly looking a lot cooler. Here is the tweet:
https://twitter.com/Dinnerbone/status/610436355991207937

- As well as skeletons having a bow animation Dinnerbone announced that all hostile mobs will have some sort of animation to display that they are in fact hostile to the player. It is still unclear exactly what this animation will be like. This was spoiled in a comment on a reddit post:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Minecraft/comments/3a0niu/dinnerbone_theyre_not_drawing_back_their_bows_yet/cs86p63

Commands, Mapmaking & Mods

- Exciting news for mod/plugin makers as implementing and registering commands will be a lot simpler now with changes to the command library being worked on by Dinnerbone, which I'm assuming will also be good news for mod/plugin users!
Dinnerbone tweeting about the change: https://twitter.com/dinnerbone/status/519799449212973056

- 1.8 was a revolution of mapmaking with loads of new commands and possibilities added in, and it seems like we can expect even more in 1.9! Ryan Holtz (TheMogMiner) already announced that he had been working making entity models NBT based. Now what does this mean? This existing mobs will be a lot more customisable with COMMANDS and MODS, thats right, you mapmakers out there could possibly make your very own mobs using the models of existing ones! We dont know much about this yet but what we've heard sounds incredible!
TheMogMiner tweeting about the new entity model system: https://twitter.com/themogminer/status/508380930202169344

- The /clone command is recieving an update and will now be able to mirror and rotate a specified cubic area.
SOURCE UNKNOWN

- A tweet by Dinnerbone suggested that there may be death messages for the death screen. For a long time death messages have only shown up in chat but now you will probably be able to actually see how you died for anyone out there who doesn't know how they died: https://twitter.com/Dinnerbone/status/588279843340611585

- On a podcast Searge announced that a new GUI for command blocks would be added in 1.9, which would include a 'tab' option finally allowing you to tab-complete in the command block interface. This will be very helpful for mapmakers or anyone using command blocks for whatever purpose!

Other

- Dinnerbone recently tweeted various pictures displaying not only a left-handed mode, but maybe even a two-handed mode. Dinnerbone has said that this does not mean dual-wielding as you will only be able to use your right-hand for hitting, placing, etc... but the left-hand will be a 'off-hand slot'. Another tweet suggests that this is directly connected with the shield slot visible in a picture from a few weeks ago showing the new combat items, allowing you to hold your shield in addition to your sword. Mobs and armor stands will also be able to dual wield. You will also be able to choose the left-hand as your main hand, swapping the functions of both hands. Here are all the important tweets that Dinnerbone has sent us:
https://twitter.com/Dinnerbone/status/602755916002373632

http://media.dinnerbone.com/uploads/2015-05/screenshots/25_11-49-40_CMbo90NUQ2.png
https://twitter.com/Dinnerbone/status/603895970196230144
https://twitter.com/Dinnerbone/status/603872971963392000

- The above point may be a bit confusing and covers a lot of topics so lets just cut straight to some more recent, clear and comfirmative screenshots of the new dual-wielding feature! Now definitely confirmed and with all the details explained. To sum up there will be an 'off-hand' slot where you can put in any item. You cannot attack (left-click) with that hand but if you have an item in your right-hand with no right-click function (e.g. a pickaxe) then you will use the item in your left-hand instead. So for example you could have a sword in your right-hand to attack and then have a reserve ender pearl in your left-hand in case you need to escape. NOTE: In order to make this work, Dinnerbone has had to completely remove the ability to right-click with your sword. Here are the screenshots:
THIS WAS (PARTIALLY) ANNOUNCED DURING THE UPCOMING FEATURES PANEL AT MINECON 2015, I'LL PUT UP A LINK WHEN A PROPER VIDEO OF THE PANEL IS AVAILABLE.
http://imgur.com/a/MuCZF

- On the point of dual-wielding, having a map in your off-hand slot will display as a minimap in the top-right corner of your screen, an extremely handy tool previously only available with mods.
THIS WAS ANNOUNCED DURING THE UPCOMING FEATURES PANEL AT MINECON 2015, I'LL PUT UP A LINK WHEN A PROPER VIDEO OF THE PANEL IS AVAILABLE.

- Dinnerbone demonstrated an very cool feature related to potion effects. He showed that you no longer need to open your inventory to view what potion effects you have as they will be now be visible in a new UI in the top-right corner of the screen. They will be arranged in 2 rows (top row positive effects, bottom negative) and from left to right based on how long they will take to wear off. The icon for the potion effect will flash more and more urgently as it wears off.
THIS WAS ANNOUNCED DURING THE UPCOMING FEATURES PANEL AT MINECON 2015, I'LL PUT UP A LINK WHEN A PROPER VIDEO OF THE PANEL IS AVAILABLE.

- As mentioned in the section on the 'Skulker', there is a new status effect in 1.9: 'Levitate'. This is only obtainable when hit by a skulker projectile or via commands (it will most likely not be brewable). The effect does what it suggests, when a player gets the effect he will begin floating upwards uncontrollably until he reaches an obstruction of the effect wears off (at which point he falls back down again). Dinnerbone said that it was more of a negative than positive effect due to how dangerous it can be in certain situations.
THIS WAS ANNOUNCED DURING THE UPCOMING FEATURES PANEL AT MINECON 2015, I'LL PUT UP A LINK WHEN A PROPER VIDEO OF THE PANEL IS AVAILABLE.

- This tweet from Dinnerbone tells us that as well as death messages showing up in chat they will also show up on the player's death screen upon dying, a pretty neat and logical feature. Here is the tweet:
https://twitter.com/Dinnerbone/status/588279843340611585

- Dinnerbone showed us an awesome new feature in a gif adding captions/subtitles to Minecraft! If you are deaf or just hard of hearing you can now choose to have little messages showing up on the right-hand side of your screen (e.g. Creeper hissing). Now I'm not deaf but I'll still definitely enjoy playing around with this neat little feature: https://gfycat.com/LinedShyAppaloosa

- TheMogMiner also announced a new cloud rendering system which may include the much anticipated changes that are yet to come for Minecraft's clouds. However these changes have not been announced and the only thing that has been confirmed is an fps increase which is always good
TheMogMiner replying to a tweet about the new cloud rendering engine: https://twitter.com/themogminer/status/507936462827184128

- OpenGL is being properly removed and completely replaced by the shaders that were first tested the 1.7 snapshots. I don't know how this will affect the game but it sounds good, so yeah!
TheMogMiner tweeting about the switch over to shaders:
https://twitter.com/TheMogMiner/status/515479546439950336

- Now refactoring is boring background code stuff and there was major refactoring work done in 1.8 which is part of the reason why it took so long. The bad news is we can expect a little more in 1.9, not much just a little. We know this because of this tweet by Dinnerbone which might mean lots of refactoring or possible just quick small code changes: https://twitter.com/Dinnerbone/status/592646304037216256

Bug Fixes

- The Minecraft Team began fixing bugs early for 1.9, as early as 1.8 development in fact, you can view these bugs on the bug tracker: https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/MC/fixforversion/15074

I really dislike this update, Minecraft was supposed to fun, and careless. But now, you can't do that. You have to remember ton's of attacks speeds, new damages, wait to attack. You can't just have a nice Minecraft fight. You have to wait to hit, figure out new attacks and armor durability. And to top it all off, they added the red hearts making the game not as kid friendly for, like, 5-year-olds.I JUST WANT TO FIGHT!NOT FIGURE OUT ATTACK SPEEDS AND HAVE TO WAIT. I WANT TO BE CARELESS.I play Minecraft as a relaxing game. Now I can't. This is why I will not be upgrading tow 1.9

i realized something: you remember this tweet? So, where is the block type in the pic? Nowhere. Jeb said that it was a reddit post and it made him happy about the new block type, meaning the picture doesn't have the new block type in it. I respect your rights to disagree and i could be wrong, but this is just how i interpret it.

I only put up the minimum information required to get the general jist of a spoiler which I could find. In this case it was this tweet. Only Mojang really know the other details and they haven't given any other spoilers so in the mean time that's all I can provide.

Also if you look in the very background you can briefly see something that looks kinda new. I have no idea if it's just me or if it is actually a new feature but that's something to point out.

That wasn't a spoiler I think the QR code was a link to something to do with Steam.

Why Steam? Why would a Minecraft picture involve Steam? None of the QR codes are there in the original images, so I don't know what they're about. Did you scan them?

No it's a link from a Mojang developer for a steam coupon or something. It's just a reward for whoever decodes it first basically.
