Gloryhammer
Gloryhammer's awesome, so here's another one of those blogs where I keep track of how much of a song I know. For those who don't know who they are, they're a British symphonic metal band with LORE! Each band member represents a character in the lore, and each of the albums are concept albums that tell a story. Tales from the Kingdom of Fife is set in 10th Century Scotland, in the titular kingdom of Fife (they use real-world locations, by the way), which has been invaded by the evil wizard Zargothrax using an undead unicorn army. The prince of this kingdom, Angus McFife, goes on a mission to rescue to kidnapped princess Iona McDougall, acquiring the mystical Hammer of Glory on the way, as well as several allies. The conflict ended with Zargothrax being frozen in liquid ice. “Wizards!” is a bonus track about the Cairngorm Wizards.
The next album, Space 1992: Rise of the Chaos Wizards, is set in 1992 and follows Angus McFife XIII as he goes on a quest to stop the escaped Zargothrax from summoning the elder god Kor-Virliath. Their third album, Legends from Beyond the Galactic Terrorvortex, takes us into an alternate reality on the other side of a vortex created when the Hollywood Hootsman blew up himself and the Earth with him to stop Zargothrax (in the end of Space 1992). Angus has followed Zargothrax into this universe, in which he has conquered Dundee and corrupted the Space Knights of Crail. Angus joins forces with a resistance led by Submarine Commander Ralathor, the hermit of Cowdenbeath, and together, along with the Hootsman, who has merged with the fabric of this reality and become a god, they end Zargothrax once and for all.
Their most recent album, Return to the Kingdom of Fife, goes back to 1022, where Zargothrax Clone Alpha 1 has awakened from his slumber beneath Dundee. This clone triggers a nuclear apocalypse, turning Dundee into a deadly wasteland home to nuclear goblins. 20 years later, Angus McFife II, who had been taken away from Dundee by the Cairngorm Wizards, who foresaw the detonation of the bomb, returned to Fife, teaming up with Ralathor, the Hootsman, and Ser Proletius (leader of the Space Knights) to take down both the Zargothrax clone and the real Zargothrax, who he had released from his cryogenic prison. Angus united the three ancient artifacts, the Hammer of Glory, the Knife of Evil, and the Vorpal Laserblaster of Pittenweem, defeating the Zargothraxes and summoning the weapons' creators, the Starlords of Eternity, who took him to space for journeys unknown. The standalone single “Fly Away” has an unclear plot, but it was confirmed by Christopher Bowes to be about Angus McFife V and be set in the year 1527.
Here's the key for labels:
Green = I know the entire song
Orange = I know most of the song, including the chorus
Yellow = I know the chorus
Red = I know another part of the song (or just one part of the chorus)
Normal = I don’t know the song
Underline = instrumental
Italics = Unreleased song (as in it's not out yet)
Turquoise, boldened, underlined, and italicized = I’m most proud of memorizing this
Alestorm
Alestorm is another band formed by Christopher Bowes, before he created Gloryhammer. They're a pirate metal band, so all their songs sound, well, piratey. They don't have lore like Gloryhammer, outside of the "Wooden Leg" Trilogy, but their songs are pretty cool. Originally, they were formed as Battleheart, which was meant to be a heavy metal project by Chris and Gavin Harper, but they made one very successful pirate song that convinced them to stick with the theme. They sent a demo to Napalm Records, who signed them, and changed their name to Alestorm. Also, of note, Chris is the lead vocalist, and he also plays the keytar, while in Gloryhammer, he's just the keyboard and does Zargothrax's spoken word segments in certain songs. Lastly, the first four albums have a cover song, with it being the final track on the first two and the penultimate on the third and fourth.
Angus McSix
Angus McSix was formed by Thomas Winkler after he was fired from Gloryhammer. Like them, McSix's members all have characters. Tom, of course, plays Angus McSix, while guitarist Thalìa Bellazecca plays Thalestris. Manu Lotter is the Buff Berserker, Skaw, and co-founder Sebastian "Seeb" Levermann is the main antagonist and origin of all evil, Seebulon. (I'm gonna be honest and say that Skaw seems like a rip-off Hootsman and Seeb's costume looks like a Skeletor cosplay.) The band's debut album continues the story of Angus McFife XIII, explaining that Zargothrax's interdimensional subspace relay from the Terrorvortex reality turned the volcanic fires of Schiehallion into a portal. Angus was in the Realm of Martyrs after throwing himself into fires when he was stabbed by the Knife of Evil, but realizing that his home was under threat, he went on a quest to escape, eventually returning to Scotland through the volcanic portal, but at the dawn of time. To get to that portal, however, he had to go through Hell, the portal to which was sealed by the sword known as Sixcalibur. Angus pulled it free and it upgraded him into Angus McSix (the pun is that "McFife" sounds like "McFive," and they're trying to one-up Gloryhammer in a way), the Starlord of the Sixtus Stelllar System. (So does that mean Angus McSix potentially the creator of the Hammer of Glory?) Unbeknownst to Angus, his return also allowed the evil archdemon Seebulon to return. After learning of the origin of all evil's return, Angus forged an alliance with Skaw, the Buff Berserker from the North, and Thalestris, the Queen of the Amazons of Caledonia, and together, they went on a quest to stop him. (Also, just so you know, the songs aren't in chronological order like Gloryhammer's are, as evident by the one labeled "Intro" being track 7.)
