Are We Spending Our Time Wisely? Did I Waste My Time Using PMC?

I'm writing this article at April 22, 2015 at 12:43 AM on a school night because I really had been longing to write about this topic. The human lifespan doesn't last forever and what we do in the present affects our future. If we invest hard work and begin to pursue our dreams earlier, it will give us a better chance. As I'm in my senior year of high school and going to college, I realize that I'm getting older day by day faster than ever. Before I know it, I'd wasted all my time.

I'm a super procrastinater, completing papers at 2AM and starting homework at 10PM. But I love Planet Minecraft to the point that I'm addicted to checking on notifications when I wake up and after school. By completing projects and recieving diamonds, feedbacks, and leveling up, it gives me pleasure to be rewarded for my work. I work hard and long on my projects that I am passionate about. However, I look back and realize that already 3+ years passed since I uploaded my first project the Rising Dawn Aircraft Carrier in December 2011.

I'm afraid that I've invested so much in Planet Minecraft rather than other things I could've done with that time. I think about how all this work on PMC won't really help me in my life. I won't be a famous PlanetMinecrafter, there are far far more successful people in the field. I'm level 55 right now and there's like people in the 90s with literally 100,000s of views and 1000 diamonds on a single work. What am I?

How is playing Minecraft going to help me with my life? None of my friends even regularly play Minecraft. PMC will have little impact on my future. These people barely know me or remember me. I'd just be another faceless user. I have other passions that I want to do, but don't do. Sometimes I feel like I have no time for ANYTHING. But in reality we have all the time we need, you are just wasting it here and there on menial things. It's not just Planet Minecraft, it's watching Youtube videos, the news, and tv. Even using the computer is a waste of time, can you go for even a day without touching a computer or a phone.

What I want to Pursue:
Well I would like to learn how to play guitar because I'd like to pratice playing an instrument and create my own music. I also want to learn how to animate using Adobe Flash to make Youtube videos, I have done a little bit before. Also I would like to learn Japanese, the mother language and the culture. I would like to learn how to do a handstand and get six pack abs. I would also like to spend more time with my friends and make better ones.

So Am I Staying on Planet Minecraft?
I'm not sure at the moment. It's hard to leave something, you've spend so much time on, but it could be necessary. I still have some projects that need to be updated. But definetly I'll be spending less time on here than before and work on real life skills.

Thank you to those who commented and diamonded.

This may sound wierd, but basically everything your pursuing is what im pursueing right now, and, I understand what you mean about PMC, if you were going to pursue this as a career, it would be a major expedition and you'd be literally logging on hours and hours at a time, but as a past time, and as after school stuff (when your not studying and doing exams) its nice to get appreciated for your work, and to see what other people do. I mainly go on to look at art blogs, because its nice to see people taking there time out just  to post a few pics, even if theyre on the down side in drawing. (but most ive seen are pretty good)
anyway, im t alking way to much.

I feel like I wasted my time on PMC. Any blog I made usually wouldn't be good. They would either be one hit wonders or 20 views. The sad thing is I usually put allot of work into thinking about my blogs, but then noticing nobody really cares isn't a nice feeling. I have basically given up PMC cause there is no profit other than Constructive Critisicm and Diamonds and Levelling up and getting money from things like Adlink, which I dont like the idea of because it's like taking money off of people who dont know, especially the younger people who download allot of projects and mods and stuff like that. There's also donations, but I don't think writing a blog is going to get someone to love you so much to donate 20 dollars or whatever currency you have.

Planet minecraft obviously won't help in the future, but no video game will... It's for fun

Life isn't about beeing Famous or anything like that. Its about having fun, it can be in RL or in the VR, it simply doesn't matter.
Enjoy everthing, and I hope you'll be happy with every dessicion you make.

Just try not to play on it too much, interacting with the community is fun, but you have to limit it.

The "I waste my time on PMC" isn't wrong, but neither is right. You see:

The things you do when your on PMC isn't always "A waste of your time". But it's mostly up to yourself HOW you want to spend your time on PMC.
Example: I spend a Lot of time giving posetive response to other users. What have I gained through that? Well an example is that I've got a LOTS of new Online-Friends that I can play with, and some of them have actually become close friends.

So overall: PlanetMineCraft is a Community. This isn't a place where you get Famous (That's called YouTube). This is a place where you have to make your Own decisions. You may not be the most creative person in the world, and you may think you suck at everything.
But this is a Community. You just have to be a part of it, before it'll be seen as it not being "A waste of time"

I hope this got you thinking a bit happier. Have a Nice day, and take my Diamond Cookie :)

Snowyfox brings up a few, good, down-to-earth points. But you shouldn't realize them as the only answers to your question of whether or not you should beat yourself up for being on here so much.

If you enjoy doing something, then you're not wasting time doing it.

Anything "fun" is a waste of time, technically speaking. Unless you enjoy homework, which personally, I do not. Don't regret that you spent those years working towards something, driving yourself to become better at building, better at making art, better at growing. There's no regrets to be had about that.

It does seem like a good idea to leave (or spend less tme on) PMC for real life stuff. I respect that decison.

Minecraft in general encourages some people to learn java and other coding languages, so I would not call it a complete waste of time. Though I would agree if you said something like mindlessly mining for hours is a waste of time.

Life is not measure in how "efficient" you are at doing something, or how much money you make, or how famous you become, but instead, of how much you enjoyed doing things.

If you do decide to quit PMC, I wish you well in whatever your endevours may be, and know that there are people in PMC that do notice what you created.

(1) No, we aren't spending our time wisely.
(1a) Exceptions apply. The forums are a great place to have an intellectual discussion. So are blog posts like these. But randomly downloading skins and resource packs are definitely a waste of time from a practical PoV.

(2) We all have inefficiency in spending our time in some way. What matters at the end is how much we affect others. In your case, you think you're nothing, but you've single-handedly took up thousands of peoples' time, for better or for worse. And for a lot of them, they consider it time well-spent to give you a well deserved diamond and encourage you to keep working.

Remember that for almost all of us here at PMC, our lives
have been changed by Minecraft and the people who play
it. It's like back in the lost MMORPGs. I don't regret spending
3 years in Minecraft; it has gave me a massive amount of
experience, made me meet a lot of people and look at things in
a different perspective, and enhanced my creativity. I would be
proud to put "server owner" in my resume.

If I spent those 3 years doing something else...like studying...or reading
...or getting "friends"...or going full-on coding...I can confidently say that
I'd highly regret it. Those sound petty compared to the way I lived my 3
years with Minecraft. I'd much rather take my current version of the past.

Was it a waste of time? Of course. That question is inherently from a
practical POV. And playing ANY video game is a waste of time, let
alone going past the video game and going into sites and making
random unnecessary digital stuff.

Was it worth investing the time into PMC?* Yes. Because it has
changed your life, and other peoples' lives, and you've joined a
community of thousands of people, and seen submissions of all
kinds, and you have seen the potential of what a game and its
mostly-young community can do. And you will never feel the
achievement of reaching level 55 elsewhere in "normal" life.

Reading dozens of books probably won't get your applause.

Doing really really well in school will probably do the opposite of make you look back and be proud; they'd just be numbers (marks) and achievements on knowledge you'll never use again, and thus forget.

Getting tons of friends will just make you see 85% of them wither away as time passes.

imo Stay in PMC. It's definitely worth the time we spend here.

*I talked about Minecraft in general earlier, but almost all of my players came from PMC. And you probably recognise me from running around in the forums, especially General Discussion; there's a lot of info to gain in that area, and a lot of things to read and talk about. It's definitely worth taking some time
to spend in; it gives exposure to other people and brings all sorts of fancy shtuff to you.

I'm a big fan of your creations, Fox, and I will admit that I will be sad that you will be going less on PMC. However, I do respect your decision, and I (and I know your other fans as well) will certainly miss you.

I understand that spending too much time in a specific hobby/thing may not end up being the best of things in the future. I know, I also did this, but hoenstly, I don't regret it. Because if I did, I feel like that the time I "wasted" having fun would have been all for nothing, so I end up not regretting it and embracing the things I've done in the past because that's what made me-me. But hey, that's just me.

Anyway, I do wish you the best, and I hope that you do well in what you want to do in the future.
I look forward to more of your posts, even if they take a while. Good luck out there
