It's not easy being a female, even in todays world. We are still judged based on our gender.
There is no place this is more apparent to me than in gaming and nerd culture. If you are a female it is assumed you are not a "real" gamer or nerd. That you are pretending for attention.
If they dorp the "Not a real X" line, the next place they go is sexist jokes, or borderline sexual harassment. Countless times I have had guys find out I was femal and tell me to get back in the kitchen, or say my shooting sucked, so it must be that time of the month. I also get a lot of requests to see my tits, and guys spawn killing me when I say no.
The only multieplayer game I have found that does not have this issue is Minecraft. No one cares most of the time. Yes there are a few sexist pigs, and that sucks, but there are more people that don't care.
More offten than not, if gender somehow comes up in chat, most guys will reply "Oh, your a girl? Thats cool" and we will move on with what we were talking about before.
This is why I love playing Minecraft online. The community is diverse and not full of jerks and pigs. True there are a few, just like there are a few cool people in other multieplayer games. My hope is oneday, gender will not be an issue when it comes to gameing, and we can all just play games and have fun.

I'm not taking sides, both sides can be equaly mean, but it is the minority. unfortunately they are usually just louder than the people that aren't
Those who play things like shooting games for the killing, the gore and being on top, and those who play for fun. What I've noticed is those who tend to like the killing are those who are rather sexist and have limited views on life.
In minecraft, you mainly get the audience that plays for fun and enjoys what the game is about.
