Hey all!
In view of the upcoming Racial Harmony Day in Singapore, I decided to post this blog to encourage racial tolerance or acceptance.
I will start with a little background of some racial riots that happened in the 1964 racial riots in Singapore. Before the independence of Singapore in 1965, the tiny red dot was connected to their neighbouring country, Malaysia. Back then, there were some disputes over how the country should be governed. The Malaysian government wanted to give privileges to the true blue Malaysians, whereas the 'Singaporean' governmnent wanted equality. This dispute caused the Chinese and Malaysians to fight and caused the deaths of many.
People living in Singapore that survived the racial riots appreciate the harmony we have with the other races of Singapore, fearful that that may happen again. Hence, Singapore decided to celebrate Racial Harmony Day every 21st July in rememberence of the horrible fights in 1964.
Racism is still very common nowadays. However, it is better to keep these comments to yourself. If you are unclear about what a racist is, I have another blog post on that. I believe that everyone is equal and no race is superior over another. During World War II, the British were racists towards the Asians. They felt that the Japanese were weaker than them. However, when the Japanese invaded, they were forced out of the country due to their machinery not updated enough and men not trained well enough.
Being a racist and making racist remarks might just lead to your own downfall.
Is it not better to have racial harmony? Does it benefit you to think that you are superior over someone else? If everyone thinks that way, the world will be a global warzone, constantly fighting with each other due to racial disputes. Racial Harmony Day teaches Singaporeans to live in harmony, appreciate each other's cultures and be as one. If you're a racist, I hope that you can change your attitude towards how you feel towards other races.
Being nice is the first step to making the world a better place.
That's about it! I hope you learnt something!
