My oh my. When it comes to running MineCraft faster one thing you can do is give it more RAM but many people are disillusioned to what it actually does. Quite a lot of people think that, the more they give, the faster it runs but this is not the case.

Yes Minecraft does take a reasonable PC/Laptop to run but like all games, RAM is not only what it is relying on. Together with the CPU, Motherboard, and Hard drives all determine how well it can be played. If you have 4-16GB of RAM I'm positive your PC will not need any more RAM allocated to MineCraft. It would be pointless.
Think of it like this. You give a baby 10 cookies but it can only eat 2 before its full, the rest are wasted.
Switch baby to Minecraft and cookies to RAM and you might see.

I have a 3.4GHz i5 with 8gb of RAM total and only use the default 512mb of allocated memory. I do not need to allocate more because the highest my used memory gets up to is 6-10% the rest is spare just in case I decide to fly out and explore the map and even then, it still only uses around 2% more.

Still confused?
Take a look at this diagram of how it works. This will vary on different computers.
Memoryjpg

As you can see from this image, if my Minecraft is using ~90mb of RAM and I allocate more memory, it's still going to use ~90mb of RAM.

Then when should I use Memory Allocation?
Press F3, If "Used memory:" Is above 50% allocating more RAM will make sure it wont become slow. This can happen with low spec'd PC's, often Netbooks and minecraft.jar's crammed to the brim with mods and plugins. Otherwise, don't worry!

o 32/64bit Operating systems.
Another reason to allocate more memory is if you use a 32bit operating system. This means your system/OS has a maximum of 4.5gb of RAM. 32bit systems use RAM differently to 64bit(technical stuff) and In this case extremely rarely have any problems with memory.

o Client Modifications(mods)
Unless you only have a few mods, don't worry about it. Otherwise if you are trying to run Minecraft with a ton of mods, this will increase memory usage and allocation can help.

I dont really think that this is a rant, more of a tutorial. People might not know this you should enter it in the blog contest. I certainly learnt something.

It has got some tutorial aspects but I wouldn't say it's a complete tutorial, It's just my views on what people think Allocation is and what it actually is. Thanks for the comment :)
