You know what has bugged me ever since I first started playing Minecraft way back in 1.3.3? It’s the fact that diamond armour and diamond tools are so good. I mean, now theres Netherite, but back then the best ore was diamond.

Diamond was always what the rich people wore, to show off to noobs, and flex onto the poor. But how realistic is diamond armour in real life?

I remember once, years ago, talking to some people, expressing my disappointment with diamond tools, saying that it would not work in the real world.

Now it is TIME TO TEST IT! And see if it really would work.

Okay, first of all, diamonds are very hard. The carbon bonds are formed in such a hexagonal way that they are extremely strong. The word diamond even means “Unbreakable”, if you look up its etymology. Diamonds are so strong that drill bits are made out of them, and saws are made with them.

The problem isn’t how strong they are, though. It is how they are warped. See, the goal of armour is to protect the wearer, and the best way to do that is to conform to the blow. I know it sounds bad, but since armour cannot simply deflect the blow (YET) it’s the next best thing.

However, diamonds don’t contort. They are completely solid, and they will bend not under any feasible circumstance. They will shatter. I am sure that some of the people reading this have watched one of the hundreds of hydraulic presses versus diamond YouTube videos and have seen what happens when a diamond is put under enormous pressure.

Now, in all fairness, it is unlikely that an opponent will be able to hit you with enough pressure to shatter your diamond armour, right? Well pressure is determined using the formula Pa=F/A (Where Pa is pressure, F is force and A is area). This means that the wider the area of estimated pressure, the less force there will be. Pressure will disperse itself among the entire area of the damage. Force is the total sum of mass and acceleration (F=MAc)

Diamonds take at least 272.15542g/2.54cm^3 to break, and I truly hope that you aren’t facing an enemy that can punch that hard. So, realistically, no. Diamond armour would not shatter under the pressure of an opponent. However, there is still something waiting to be asked:

How much would it hurt? Wearing diamond armour seems great, but it would not realistically protect you very well at all. The idea of armour is (as I stated above) to warp around the enemy’s weapon. Diamond would not warp. The molecules in diamonds are built in such a way where they can’t bend. I already stated that they can shatter, but this isn’t about that. This is about the fact that this diamond armour would not absorb any of the force. An opponent would theoretically hit your armour, and your armour would then hit you. With the same force. Iron armour would bend to the enemy weapon. Iron would absorb the blow. But diamonds would not do that. In short, no, diamond armour is not at all practical, and you are best off sticking with iron or chainmail armour.

I hope you enjoyed this theory. I tried to do an easier one, as others like how hot the Nether is, or how much pressure is in the Overworld's air (affecting elytra flight) are far too hard for me. I do intend to make more of these, but the next release will probably be a Lore theory, instead of a Science Theory. Anyway, keep on loring, s’ya later!
