Hello, random person of the internet who is reading this post right now. Thinking of joining a server? This guide will help you pick the server that suits your style.

1. Pvp/Factions/Survival

This is the most basic type of server. You play a regular Minecraft match, except that with help or angainst other players. After traveling blocks and blocks, you will finally be able to find the place to call home. Just watch out for griefers, raiders and trolls, as these are allowed in these servers.

2. Creative/Plots

The second common server. These will usually put you in a large area, a.k.a "Plot", and let you build what your imagination desires. Or just blow stuff up without anyone minding, as you can only edit your own plot, unless you have the permission of others to edit theirs.

3. Prisons

These are really weird servers. Once you get to spawn, you are sent to prison, in where you mine and mine until you get enough money to go to an even harder prison, in which you mine even more. These mines usually reset, so you don't have to worry about running out of blocks to mine.

4. PvP Arenas/Hunger Games

In these servers, you are put in a battlefield with specific armour and weapons. You battle many other Crafters to be the last Miner standing. These usually have a shop, spawn or other non-pvp place, in which you can buy/upgrade your tools, armour and weapons.

5. Skyblocks

When you enter this server, you are commanded to strand yourself in the particulary popular Minecraft Map, Skyblock. You can be alone or copperate with friends to survive in this floating island, before you fall into the void of doom. These usually have "quests" that you have to fufill to earn grass blocks.

6. Minigame Servers

From Hide and Seek to Last Man Standing, these servers make the most of Minecraft by making various minigames. You can usually earn money from these, which you may use to buy upgrades, Creative Mode, etc.

7. Showcases

These aren't really the most popular servers. They have very complex, awesome buildings, but there's just one problem: You can't actually do anything. You just walk around, "admiring" the structure, but there's no fun. No activities, no mining, no building. Just watching.

8. RPG Servers

Well come to the RPG Servers, where all your totally unrealistic dreams can come true! Wether you are a Zombie Apocalypse Survivor, a member of a royal family, a bucket of cheese or even a Creeper, these servers require you to use your imagination to the maximum.

9. Townies

These servers are like that one game... oh yeah, Animal Crossing. You make a village, which you can expand into the most ridiculously epic proportions. People can join your village too.

10. Multiverses

A Multiverse is a server which has more the one of the types above. They are all linked to a "hub" in the spawn, easilly accessed by portals. You can have a Creative land, a prison, a Faction in Survival and a Skyblock, all in the same server. They have a little bit of everything!

----

There are even more types of servers, scattered around the internet. So it doesn't matter if you are a pixel artist, a miner, a griefer or a warrior, there's always a server fit for you. Unless you are a circle fanatic. Good luck for that!
