Skinning Necessities (For Me)
Minecraft Skin Viewer, Pixlr, Microsoft Paint (replace this with your preferred skinning app, see Submission Rules

Rules of Thumb for Every Skin, As I Know Them, Slightly.
  1. If you are recreating a skin off of an image, know that you have to compromise to fit into the texture size and shape. (You should know this by now, why did I post it...)
  2. I've recently graduated to the three-pixel eye as it allows me to put more detail into the face
  3. Always color your eyebrows several shades darker than your base hair to make it look more realistic (if there is hair, or eyebrows)
  4. Always border articles of clothing with a darker shade if there is a new piece showing. Ex: Coat over pants, shirt under pants. Black needs no border, unless it is a shiny material like obsidian or velvet.
  5. The hat section is very useful for mustaches, hoods, and bushy eyebrows: Use it!
  6. For Later: If you're blurring one piece of something, do not blur it into something else unless it is directly attached or conflicts with the object. Ex: Red Vest, Blue Scarf: Blur. Black Frock, Blue Scarf: Do Not Blur
Onwards

So now that you've learned about my methods and tools, here is how I use them. I create a skin using Microsoft paint, downloading and rewriting the skin file in between sessions with the Skin Viewer. Then, once I have my base skin, I pop the file into Pixlr. Selecting the Burn tool (closed palm), I usually set the brush to 1 px, midtone range, and exposure at 50. This I use for forming wrinkles, scars, and other dark shading effects. (For those who like to "highlight" areas, your best friend will be Dodge, the ink dripper right next to Burn; I have yet to master this.)
Then I select the Blur tool (droplet of water), select an area with Marquee (ant-trail blue square) or the Wand tool, whichever the project calls for, and blur the edges (see Rule 6).

You can experiment as you like with Pixlr to suit your needs. Adjustment= Color Change, Filter=Palette Change
