So you want to be good eh, then read on!
Projects: Everybody likes a good, big unique build as a good project. Think of something no-one has done before, and build it. The number 1 thing to remember is take your time and put heaps of effort into your build/redstone device etc. Maybe make a little game associated with it so people don't get bored, or maybe make it so it is fit for survival mode!
Textures: Everybody likes a good, unique texture pack. If you are good in skinning, put your skinning skills into the mobs and maybe even the blocks. But every good texture has some sort of 'theme' to it. It can be medieval, a pattern or even tron-like. But nobody likes overused packs like troll packs or Super Mario packs, think of something unique then make it. Even if it is simplistic, take your time!
Skins: Everybody likes a unique skin. Skins are the most popular uploads in the whole entire site, but never get many views. In fact, they are viewed less than a really stupid like blog. You don't always have to shade, shading always depends on the skin. If the skin is a pattern, don't even think about shading. Noise is not good on a skin either. It makes it look gay. But everyone has their own technique of shading, yet some better than others. But some skinners shade their skins a little too harshly, not every pixel needs to be a different color you know. Another good idea is make a sin series, if people like them, you are almost guaranteed a sub.
Servers: Unique servers are a good thing too. As you might know, nearly every server is factions. Not everybody likes factions, so it is a great idea to steer away from this plugin. A unique server however would be more like something rarely done, like a server with free op/creative. Put some money into it and make it lag-free so people will join and enjoy the server. Upgrade when you are getting popular.
Blogs: A good blog does not have to be very unique, but does have to have good punctuation and correct spelling (some comedic blogs excepted.) Write a blog about some good skill, tutorial or review. Try to get some really famous Minecrafters in for a review then you will have heaps of views and diamonds. Just take your time and for gods sake, put in a picture even if the picture is a bit off topic!
Mods: People absolutely love unique mods. There are a heap of herobrine, mo' gems and stuff like that. Think of something absolutely no-one else has ever thought of. Even though mod makers are not allowed on PMC anymore, it is a good idea to code it yourself so you can have absolute control over how it works. But make it useful to the community. Look through the minedeas contest and make mods from that, because that's what people want.
