This tutorial is based on my experiences in Multiplayer. Yours may be similar.

Lets begin...

1. Congratulations!

Congrats. You've just found a server that you think looked interesting. Friendly staff, tons of plugins, and it's freebuild. What joy! Give yourself a pat on the back.

2. Day 1

Just like your first day in single-player, the first day in multiplayer is bad. It can be even worse. On your first day, immediately go out into the world and search for food and wood. Those are the two keys to your survival for now. Food and Wood. In multiplayer there may be a lack of these things, because there are other players too. If you cannot find any of these things, don't worry. Usually there is always a cool player who gives things out to new players. Don't always count on this player, only if you are desperate. If you cannot find wood and no one wants to share, just hang out at the spawn for now. Wait 'til later.

3. Build an Alliance

This isn't the Hunger Games, but it might as well be. Life is hard in multiplayer, and anyone will do anything to keep it. Form an alliance as SOON as possible with other newbies in the server. It isn't very hard to do. A simple "who wants to live with me?" or "anyone want to be in an alliance with me?" will do. An alliance is useful because there are more people helping out and you can go search for supplies with greater intake in the end. A faction is a great way to form an alliance. Especially an official one. Be warned that not all players are trustworthy, make sure they don't steal or hurt other members of your team. Either kill or banish this player from your team.

4. Beware the Jockey...

A Jockey is my word for a player who is elite. Who has full diamond armor and tools and lives in a big house or is in a powerful faction. They are usually arrogant and sometimes kill newbies on site. Avoid these players at all times unless they can be trusted. The Jockeys sometimes lure you with diamonds, food, or shelter. They give it to you, you are extremely grateful, then they kill you. If you see a Jockey, just walk/run away or go back to spawn/your house. If they see you, they might lure you with stuff. Just say "No thanks" or just walk away. If you have known what it feels like to get full diamond armor and a diamond sword, and you see that little noob walking around, you know what it feels like to be a Jockey. Again, Jockeys are not always bad, just make sure you can trust them before you approach them.

5. Avoiding Conflict

No one likes it when they are killed and all of their hard-earned items are stolen. Avoiding any type of conflict is the best way to keep your items. Examples of conflict are if you stumble into someone's "territory." They see you, and they don't like it. That person will most likely run at you with a sword in their hand. The best thing to do is to teleport back to spawn, to your house, or disconnect from the server for a while. It may sound wimpish, but it's the best way. DO NOT engage in conflict unless you are armed. That means armor, and at least an iron, gold, or diamond sword. Usually Jockeys are the one's that run at you like a mad cow. If it is just someone building a house peacefully, leave them alone. Do not grief their house or disturb the peace. This gives them a good reason to attack you.

6. Make a Shelter

Building a cozy house for yourself increases your chances of survival. A good place to relax and to make some chests to put your valuables in. DO NOT make a house out of dirt. Just don't. These houses usually are blown up and destroyed by Jockeys or Operators. Or players with taste. No one likes these simple houses. No one. Make your house out of wood, stone, and logs. Make it stylish but not too fancy. Build your shelter not too far from the spawn, and not too close to other players, this decreases your chances of being griefed, or stolen from.

7. Behave

C'mon guys, it's not that hard. If you start liking the server a lot the least you can do is behave. Respect the rules and the staff.

8. Try to Avoid Mobs...For Now

Yes, in your early stages try to stay away from the hostile mobs. Only kill zombies if you are in desperate need for food. The rotten meat still fills your hunger-meter. Skeletons are a bitch, just stay away from those. Don't fight monsters until you have a nice set of armor and a good sword. You don't have to, but it's the best way. Try to not go out at night, just stay in your house and do stuff. When mining, make sure you have plenty of torches and you can hear. A creeper is pretty stealthy when it sneaks up on you.

9. Make some Money

Sell stuff. Sell the crap that just fills up your inventory to the server or at the market. Most big servers have these plugins, if not, just throw them away or give them to new players on the server.

10. Diamonds

Diamonds. Just the word makes you excited. Diamonds can control just about anything. Anyone will do anything for diamonds. It's why Jockeys use them, it's why people are excited when they see them. If you offered a Diamond gem to every new player who joins your faction, you'll be the most popular faction for now. If you were selling Diamond at your house, people will go. It's simple. Diamondology

I saw you said build your house near the spawn. If I'm not mistaken, this is worse than building your house far from spawn. I recommend 1000-2000 blocks away. Please correct this.

P.S. You can use Lockette to protect your chests from griefers. Just type in the following:

The easiest way to become creative is to donate to keep the server running. Most servers, if you donate like 10 bucks or something, will give you creative. Another way to become creative is to become a Moderator. But that's a lot harder.
