Minecraft Realms vs. Minecraft Server Hosting

Hey there!  I know many people may be wondering how Realms compares to Minecraft server hosting, what features Realms has, or even what the heck realms is!  I'll help the people out there who need some more info on Realms and whether Realms is really worth the money.


What is Minecraft Realms?:
Minecraft Realms is pretty much server hosting that Mojang (creators of Minecraft) has set up so that friends and family can play on the same world.

Minecraft Realms Pros:



Minecraft Realms has a bunch of great features that make it really easy to use!  First off, to start a survival world, all you have to do is click like 3 buttons and then you are set to play!  Realms also allows you play from a few select Minigames that only takes a few clicks from you're mouse and you are ready to play with your friends.  Another great feature that is VERY useful is that it automatically backs up your world.  This could be useful if you fall into lava or someone griefs your house.  There are also different things that you can edit on your Realm, such as its name, the gamemode, the difficulty, and the description.  It also allows you to check how much time you have left on your server before the subscription ends by pressing one button.  Realms is very user friendly in that it only takes a few clicks to do anything.

Minecraft Realms Cons:



While there are many nice things about Minecraft Realms, there are also many negatives.  First of all, there is zero world editing whatsoever.  You dont get to choose super-flat, extra-biomes, or anything.  It just throws you into a normal Minecraft world.  While you can use commands on your world, command blocks are not yet allowed, so the making of server management machines cannot be done.  Players is another problem on Minecraft Realms.  You can only INVITE 20 players to play on your world; however, only 10 players can be playing on your world at once.  I find that the minigame maps are nice, but I wish they had more.  Currently they have 5 minigames: Cake Defense 2, Blocks vs. Zombies, The Walls, Autospleef, and Dash of Doom.  These minigames are fun, but they can get old pretty quick.  A large variety of minigames would keep my friends and I busy for a long, long time.  Price is another problem, I think.  While 13 dollars (8 euros) may not seem like a lot, it is a good amount more than what minecraft server hosts offer.  Realms lacks some features that make Minecraft extra fun.

Overview:
Realms is really nice if you just want a simple world to play on with your friends.  It is DEFINITLY NOT reccommended if you are trying to make a server to make money or host a large number of players.  It is also very nice if you aren't very good with servers because allows you to easliy change things with just the click of a few buttons.  If you want a large, public server, Realms isn't for you, and you should instead find a good server hosting company.

UPDATE: 2 new Minigames (Pizzaslpeef, Kmockback Madness)
 Command Blocks are now useable
MCR is also great if you just want to make your own personal server to play with a few friends

Realms VS server: realms gets SMASHED! 
1) price difference, realms cost much more.
2) RAM, realms has tiny RAM compared to servers...
3) no modding or plugins on realms D:
4) auto whitelist....you should be aloud to choose if you want the whitelist or not
5) a minecraft server can do the exact same thing as realms if you put a whitelist on.

OVERVIEW: Realms sucks.

Wrong, realms were setup as a money making idea by mojang, it's more than what some hosts offer (Cost wise) and it's ruining the industry, my host does £6 per GB a month $10, realms doesn't even have 1GB RAM... Slots are limited on realms, on most hosts; mine included they are not, and for £8 a month, I'd be expecting more.

True, they are doing it as a money-making device, but truthfully that is what all server hosts are after.  I also did mention that server hosts can cost less than Realms servers.
