Intro:
• Hello user, this blog will help you with your pixel-art skills by providing an array of tips and tricks by Nitgo. I've worked on multiple texture packs and skins alike while drawing some digital art on the side, and I will share some of what what I've learnt so far.

There are many ways for you to edit textures and skins; I've tried 6 editors so far:

The best one for most people (Including beginners) is the 🌎PMC skin-editor, it's quite easy to use with a variety of available selections such as Steve, Alex, and other mobs. If you'd like some tips to keep in mind while using the PMC skin-editor just open the spoiler below.

🌎 PMC skin-editor tips and tricks
1. Resolution changer
You can increase and decrease the resolution of your Minecraft texture. PMC allows you to upload skins and mob-skins that are twice the regular resolution, but PMC doesn't accept any textures that are lower in resolution than the original textures.



2. Color palettes

You can create you very own color palette, which you can also share with friends. You can create up to 32 color palettes, however you can delete your older palettes to free up your storage, and make even more. It's quite easy to use.



3. Skin loading using username
If you would like to load up your skin, or someone else's skin without having to search for the skin and downloading it you can easily use the "Get mc username" option to load up the skin right away.



4. Importing reference images

If you're drawing from a reference, then you might find it helpful if you were to import it directly to the website. PMC allows you to select colors from the image as well to speed up your texturing.




5. Painting across limbs

If you're drawing the same thing on both sides of the limbs, then it would be to use the mirror tool to decrease the time spent coping your work on both sides.
X-axis: mirrors left & right on the same body part.
• Y-axis: mirrors top & bottom on the same body part.
• Through: mirrors back & front of the same body part.
• Across Limbs: mirrors across opposing limbs.






On The other hand if you want to go more in-depth with your textures (Usually when creating texture-packs) you might want to get your hands on a photo-editor, in which case you might enjoy using PaintDotNet as it is a free, simple photo editor that offers versatility and convenience. It also works with drawing pads. 🎨




If you're into modeling mobs, items, and/or blocks, animating them, or just simply texturing them, then Blockbench would be your go to. It's simple to use, easy to understand, and anyone could learn about it in a week or two.





When texturing, there are a lot of things to keep in mind. The more you draw, the better you'll get, thus the best way to learn and improve at something is to try it out while looking at ways to improve.

1.Getting an ideaπŸ’‘
When starting a project, you have to have a vision of the end product, and how it might look at the end so you'd have a clear image of your desired goal, but what if you don't know where to start? Sometimes you need ideas, inspiration, and/or motivation, but how can you get them?
  • Inspiration can be gained from looking at other related art, sometimes I might go look at the trending tab and get ideas from other users' creations. You can look at art on other platforms such a Deviant art, and when you find a topic of interest, you can start narrowing down your search for inspiration from sci-fi to robots, to cyborgs or whatever topic interests you. group_workSkinterest by Fawne had the right idea when they used to share moody/thematic pictures as a starter kit for inspiration.
  • Ideas are interesting because they are a derivative of inspiration. Ideas condensate off of a brainstormer like water, but to truly find an idea that you like and want to stay on you have to start drawing even if it doesn't make sense, get an idea. Don't be afraid to erase your progress, and try not to add detail at this stage because details will only hinder your brainstorming and will make you slow again.
  • Motivation is hardest to acquire because it's not something that comes on its own, and it could be lost half way through the drawing process, but one way to get motivation is when you're motivated, ask yourself why or how you got motivated, try talking or acting your desires into reality, and motivation will follow closely from behind, catching up as you gain heat, eventually leading to laser focus concentration.
2.Sketching πŸ“˜
So you've gotten a good idea to start, but you don't know how to apply it, start by slapping your ideas into existence. Start drawing a rough idea of what you want, going layer by layer, each layer adding more detail, while sketching over the previous one till you have a base to work off of. If you feel like there's something that you do not like, it's completely normal to change it, but commit and try to perfect your drawings. The more you sketch, the faster you'll be.


3.Finalizing πŸ“˜
So you've gotten a pretty good idea of what you're drawing, and you're simply ironing out the details, when doing so make sure before you upload your work, or use it, give yourself 10 minutes of rest (go drink a cup of water, finish another task, or do anything to get your mind off of your work for a hot minute) or so for your mind to rest, sometimes after long minutes or hours of work, a person might find it difficult to truly judge the quality of his/her own art. You can also ask for other people's opinion before going live with your work, you'd be surprised how much your perception might change.

Making textures requires practice, but one way to speed up is to take some tips upon your art projects. Here are some tips I found to be helpful:

1.Anti aliasing:
This is probably one of the most basic concepts, but it's very important to understand. when adding curves make sure you're not making the curves look too sharp, but not too blurry either. Make sure corners are sharp and visually striking.



2.Picking colors:
When picking colors, there are many concepts to keep in mind, how cold do you want your tones? What about the saturation? The average brightness is also something too keep in mind, but one way to get better is by testing out many colors with each other, sometimes there will be combinations that might surprise you.



3.Noise:
• When drawing make sure to keep in mind what style you're going for:-
• Whether you're going for a more gradient oriented colorful texture, which will involve a lot of colors (Such as DragonsDungeon), or you're going for a more dull, yet detailed texture (Like FishyMint), you have to make sure each pixel's location is reasonable/sensible or otherwise you'll end up with noise.
• Do not be afraid to draw chunks of pixels with the same color, some people feel like it would be empty, and end up patching them with poorly drawn noise or filler.



4.References:
When drawing from a reference image, make sure you don't add too much unnecessary detail if your canvas doesn't allow for it. You can add, remove, or change details to your liking; no one will stop you lol, but don't stray too far off of the original, so you don't lose essence (if you're going for that).



5.Material differences:
When shading materials make sure you know how they reflect light. For example, if the material is metallic, or reflective then you might want to give it more shine. If the material is refractive, you can give the shine a little more color, if your shading clothes however you might want to dim down on the brightest parts.





When advertising your work after you're done, first step would be to advertise it so it'd be both active and relevant on the site, but how do you catch people's attention?

important_devices Visual simplicity:
Notice how sometimes people prefer books with photos, or drawings in them? People enjoy visual things over text based advertisements, or if you're going to use text make it bold and big, to be seen amongst the others.
Make sure the way you advertise the textures is straight to the point and none complicated. Sometimes compiling a lot of textures in one image might actually be less effective than showing 2 or 3 textures instead.

Red is the most visually striking/attractive color, while .highlighting. a .part. of the thumbnail/banner to emphasize something, however, do not go overboard, and use each one sparingly as to not overdo it. The best type is the subtle type that integrates the highlights into part of the texture to seem more natrual.

link Linking things together:
When someone finally clicks on your stuff, you want to give them the option to easily navigate your content, for example you can link to your personal info such as discord, other platforms like Twitter or Instagram, or you can straight up just link to your other content. If you have linked content such a comic, or a multi-part series, then it would be ideal to link them together one way or another.

If you want to be contacted for commissions, or other things like job offer, make it easy for users to contact you, and have an open mind, some business people are sometimes a little professional in their way of speech, and it might come across as rude, however they might just be straight to the point.

But how can you make people commission you? Make sure that there's somewhere people can view your content in full, or at least your best content. If your platform has a good profile page, make sure to make it interesting at first sight, so you'd get more interest at first sight. Display your prices, rules, and strongest areas.

You gave alternative programmes for skin editing and also explained the local example. I also like the idea of explaining the basics of drawing(what's anti-alliasing, noise or anything)
