First of all I'd like to say hello there :) I'm skillet4eva and I've been a long- time pmc user and bukkit user.

As a former admininistrator of an Australian hosted server and partaken in several servers as staff or creation of severs. I thought a blog about good plugins that can make a server good.

Check out some of the plugins I'd reccomend if you're racking your brain for making a server.

1- The Jobs Plugin
The jobs plugin in short gives the player a job and they can earn money
,
from my own experience the jobs plugin is a very fun plugin that helps kickstart an economy. This plugin works like a charm without being overpowered with servers running an economy based system.

2- Mcmmo
Ah this classic plugin, mcmmo is an rpg style plugin that lets you level up your skills in areas such as mining, repair, woodcutting and alchemy (and more!). Many of the servers that I've used mcmmo it's been very enjoyable, it's a great plugin that transforms something like mining into something where you can get double drops from diamonds depending on your level. It is customisable with the max level if you want to set a limit for your players. As a bonus certain skills can be disabled if you don't want OP people with axes it's entirely up to you how you want to customise the user experience.

3- Towny
Traditionally or rather normally towny is used on a lot of rpg style servers and even non- rpg servers, towny works with an economy system based on rent that is taken out each day, you can customise how towny works for the user experience, from my experience I've seen the good and the bad of towny, towny can be either good or bad depending on how you set it up. Towns can be great ways to encourage people to form towns and/or clans and can work in conjunction with the economy plugin that you or a server may use.

4- Magic Carpet
Primarily the magic carpet is as the title suggests
the plugin can be an awesome donator perk, as such on the survival server that I currently play. Essentially by default with /mc or /magiccarpet it activates a carpet of glass in a 5x5 (default) radius and goes with you like it works like Aladdin's magic carpet. Overall my impression is that it is a definite work in progress but a great plugin that can make travelling fun.

5- Craftbook
Craftbook is a plugin that allows a variety of things that can be done, from crafting stuff from cauldrons, switching paintings to sitting on stairs by right clicking them. Craftbook contains a menagerie of different things that you can do, recipes are completely customisable and you can change them anytime you wish if you want to make them harder or better. Currently it's my first time use with craftbook and I've been very impressed with the plugin and I would reccomend it if you want to spice survival up a little bit.

6- Abba Rules
Many people know about the game abba rules from mindcrack, well now someone has developed a plugin called abba rules. It works based on the idea of points and customising a timer set at 20 minutes by default. It's a great addition to any server that wants to bring the mindcrack experience for people who have never tried it or want to try it again.

7- WorldEdit
WorldEdit is a great plugin that can allow you to do an array of things from clearing land, filling in something, creating a schematic and more. When it comes to taking less time to make something WorldEdit is one of the plugins to help assist in copying, pasting and making something quicker to be created when it comes to server management.

8- Essentials
Essentials is the must have for any bukkit server, Essentials enables you do /spawn, /home and more even /gm 1. Essentials is bundled into four parts, essentials Protect, essentials Spawn, essentials Economy and essentials Chat. It is the must have in terms of making a bukkit server semi- vanilla. Essentials is as the name suggests, it contains many plugins within one and makes it all the more easier without having to install extra plugins to manage stuff like chat manager.

9- Disguisecraft
Disguisecraft allows you to disguise as any mob that you have with your permissions, from the wither to the chicken to the spider you can disguise as anything and take the hitbox of that creature. Settings can be configured that you can be left alone by mobs, even un- disguising whe you attack a mob or player. Be careful however as ones like chicken can be overpowered on pvp- enabled servers.

10- Mypets
Mypets is kind of like pokemon in minecraft, you can customise certain mobs with skills and whether they attack players or just other mobs, they're great to level up and you can have some amusing kinds of mobs even a witch, a wither provided you can tame them with the required materials to tame them which also happen to be customisable. What more can I say? Try it :)

These are only some of the many, many plugins that makes a server good, maybe even unique, this is only the shorthand list that comes to mind for me when I think about good plugins that make a server. Thanks for taking the time to read this and hope to make some more submissions a little more often...can't promise the more submissions part need inspiration for that bit :P

Wow, I didn't know so many plugins exist. My server is vanilla. Not survival but vanilla, so my knowledge of plugins is none.

Fair enough, I've played on only a few vanilla servers, mainly bukkit or spigot- based servers

These are some neat plugins you've listed here. If I was to start a server, I'd use a number of these (the magic carpet one in particular sounds cool). Some of these plugins I've never heard of until now (like the Disguisecraft one). Here's a diamond.
