Paint.net

Paint.net is a wonderful piece of software perfect for making textures for a Texturepack or making a pack.png it is very easy to learn and is very intuitive.

I don't think it is good for making Art or Complex Skins because it does not have a good color pallet system.

» Compatibility:

Windows 10/11. Exporting into PNG is no problem.
Alternatives are GIMP (WIN 10/11 & MAC OS X+) and PMCSkin3D

GIMP

GIMP is my personal primary software for making textures on my Work MacBook. It is good for making textures for Texturepacks or making a pack.png it is a bit harder to understand than Paint.net because it has a lot of extra features you just have to try and see what is better for you.
It works fine for making more complex Art, but I can't judge on this field because i rarely do such stuff.

I don't think it is good for making Complex Skins because it does not have a good color pallet system.

» Compatibility:

Windows 10/11 and Mac OS X and higher (Linux as far as I know too). Exporting into PNG is no issue, but you have to use the “Export to” or “Overwrite” Feature.
Alternatives are Paint.net (WIN 10/11) and PMCSkin3D

PMCSkin3D

Very good Web App for making skins, it has a build in Color pallet system, what makes it good for complex skins as well.
It is not always intuitive.

» Compatibility:

All Modern Web Browsers.
Alternatives are Pieces of software mentioned above.

Blockbench

Blockbench is a 3D Modeling program made for Minecraft it supports Optifine Models, Mod/Java Models and even Skins (Texturing Skins on a 3D Model)

If you are new to Blockbench, I recommend watching a few Tutorials Online before starting.

» Compatibility:

Windows 10/11 Mac OS X and higher (and Linux)
Alternatives for Skin Making are Software already mentioned above.

Notepad++

Notepad++ is an advanced Text editor that is great for editing .json Files, this is especially handy if you don't use VS Code. Obviously handy if you make Datapacks.

Does not support .mcmeta or .mcfunction specially you can only edit them normally.

» Compatibility:
Windows 10/11
An Alternative is Visual Studio Code

Visual Studio Code

Clean and good Code/Text Editor.

It is great for Datapack Makers because you can open an entire Folder and edit all of your stuff.

» Data-pack Helper Plus:
It is an Extension that colors your .mcfunction commands and makes it generally easier to work with Minecraft Datapacks in VS Code.

» Compatibility:
Windows 10/11 and MacOS X and higer.

For some reason I thought it was Windows only. Cool. But I do find the default text editor in Mint is good enough for json files.

I find Blockbench to be very good for making skins, although I also make some 3D models with it!

A lot of these work in Linux Mint. Linux Mint is Ubuntu and Debian based, so most of these will work in anything Ubuntu or Debian. If you can't get one of these, there's probably something just as good for your Distro.

For example: I don't need the listed text editors because the built-in text editor in my Distro has the listed features and more. I use Intellij community edition when I need a mod compiler.

The Article focuses on MacOS and Windows that is why I have not specificity said if something is compatible with Linux (and yes I know if something works for Debian/Ubuntu) it probably works for the most Linux distributions as well.

There is nothing wrong with your Comment I just wanted to make this clear

I wasn't correcting you, as I assumed you probably didn't get a chance to see if or how those programs worked on Linux. I have never had a chance to use Mac for example. I just wanted to tell other Linux users that they could use basically all of what you listed, or they might have an even better option already installed.
