Disclaimer: Keep in mind I am not an expert, the advice I give may not be the best; but I feel that all server owners should know this advice. This advice is coming from owning four servers, and being a staff member on at least ten other servers.

Introduction:

Getting players to become staff on your server may seem like an easy task, although there are many things that need to be taken into consideration before you choose (a) staff member(s). Some players may come on and demand for 'OP' or 'Admin', while others may take a sneakier approach and gain your trust until the point where they are capable of destroying your server beyond the point of repair. But there are those people, who are dedicated to help server owners and just want to help the server grow. But, be careful who you trust.

Choosing who you want to be staff on your server can take time, while finding the 'perfect' staff member can take countless hours. Certain abilities need to be taken into consideration as you choose who becomes staff on your server

The 'Perfect' Staff Member:

There are countless abilities that a staff member can bring to a server, listed below are just a few of the many abilities that a staff member should have as being a server staff member.

Command Knowledge: Knowledge of common server commands is a vital ability that all staff members should have. Most staff should know the moderation commands such as '/ban, /kick, /tempban, /ipban, etc.' All staff should know how to use moderation commands in the event that they are necessary in such event. It is also useful to know the 'fun' commands, such as '/hat, /give, /disguise, /fly' While it is not a 'necessary' ability, it is great to know how to use the commands.

Maturity: This is definitely a 'must' in being a staff member, the ability to keep your cool during stressful situation or just getting harassed. Going berserk in one of those situations can lead to disaster. While 'some' staff are just plainly not mature at all, they are capable of handling a situation accordingly. That's definitely not the case with all people, unfortunately.

Common Server Activity:
What is the point in having a staff member if they are only on once every 2 weeks? Server staff must be capable of being active to help engage with server management and even be on just to answer questions and solve problems. In-active staff solve little purpose to the server, and should be replaced with someone who can be active.

Correct Grammar/Spelling: This somewhat goes with maturity, although it is not a ability needed; it is great to have. Staff should be able to type excessively without simple grammar or spelling mistakes. While spelling and grammar mistakes are common when typing, they should not happen excessively to the point where it is making whatever you type look like a disaster of alphanumeric characters.

Team Leadership: This is also not a needed skill, but can come in handy in certain situations. Having the ability to lead a group of people in an orderly manner, while staying in a calm state, is definitely useful, especially when it is a large group of people. Also going along with that, it is also important for a staff member to know when they are taking it too far and when they are abusing when leading a large/small group.

Trust: Hiring a staff member means that you should be able to trust them, and they should be able to trust you. When one of the two is considered false by the staff member or server owner, something needs to be changed. All staff should be able to trust the owner, while the owner should have faith in the server staff that help manage the server. If you are a server owner and cannot trust a staff member, keep an eye on them, or even exchange them for another trustful player. *While you may be able to trust a staff member, be careful. As I stated earlier, not all staff members want to help manage and grow your server*

Building Skills: While this is not something all people are perfect at doing, it does come into handy when helping grow a server. Building is definitely not my type of thing, but with the help of other staff members (Great builders), I was able to build a spawn in no time at all. Even if you believe it is not your greatest ability, try it out. You never know, you may end up being the best builder on the server.

Java Knowledge: While I never expect my Moderators or Administrators to ever help me code a server plugin, having a Co-Owner to assist me with coding was a HUGE help. Especially when they had more knowledge and patience than me. While this is 100% definitely not a necessary skill, although it can be a huge part of a server, and your server management career.

Honesty: This also goes along with trust, having honest staff is a vital part of server management, and a good personality. It is better to have a staff member tell the truth about a certain topic than have them lie and find out later the truth (Based off of server experience) *Be careful what you trust as honesty, not everyone will be honest; and that can lead to major problems*

Common Activity Part 2: Adding to the ability to have staff members that are commonly active on your server to help manage the server and help solve problems, it is good to have staff members from a wide range of time zones. Having staff members all in one localized time zone means that at certain points in the day, none of the staff will be able to join and manage the server. While is is not needed on a server, it is useful to have in the event something happens with the server and needed immediate attention from the server staff.

Ability to Multi-task: While the ability to multi-task can be useful, it also can be dangerous. Multitasking can help server productivity, on the other hand, it can overwhelm you with task and stress you to the point where you lower your standards just to get the task(s) done.

Productive: Staff members should be able to work on their own, or with other people in order to get a task done. Being able to be productive on a server helps everyone out.

Communicative: Staff members should be able to communicate with other server staff in order to successfully manage the server, and get task done. Poor communication with other staff can lead to problems and major confusion for everyone. While it is not always needed, it is a great skill to have.

Responsible: Task assigned to a staff member should be completed on time, and the staff member assigned is responsible for getting the task done. They should also be responsible for fixing issues and solving problems, not only theirs; but other problems that players may have.

These are just the few of many abilities that server owners should look for in their staff members, not everyone is perfect; do not expect every single ability to be found in your staff members.

Conclusion:

Picking staff can be a stressful task, I hope that this thread helped you, or may help you in the future with picking staff members. While the advice I gave may not all be useful to all, I hope at least some of it will help server owners with the time consuming task of picking staff members.

Keep in mind that this is only advice, what you do is your decision. I am not responsible for any damage done to your server after picking a staff member with the advice I gave. Be careful who you hire as a staff member.

If you have any suggestions, or notice any mistakes; please let me know in the comments.

you are right, those are great standards to have

for readability i would recommend you a different colour than bright green though, as it is difficult to read on a bright grey background

This is fantastic. I followed pretty much all of these when selecting staff for what was once my server,  which got decently popular. The only difference I had was that I didn't require Building or Programming skills, yet the builders could become a new staff rank and I programmed my plugins myself.
