Today I'm not going to talk about servers, nor have fancy tea talk with awesome people. Today it is time for something serious, which might even mean the end of the online community:

Minecraft servers, eternal growth

Back in the old days, the growth of the amount of servers were a blessing. We were amazed by the possibilities, the advanced gameplay, and the feeling of connection. Today many can't imagene minecraft without multiplayer, it has become an essential part of our community.

However, this blessed growth never stopped, and the amount of servers is growing even today.
So why is this a problem?

There are 12,490,269 people who bought minecraft by now. There are 9,352,985 servers. This may seem small compared to the 12 million, but do not forget that there are 18 servers being created every day. The dooms day scenario here is, that the community would be so split, that only some servers would hold a large community, and the others around the 2-10.

You might wonder, should we be affraid? Yes, you so should. Because Minecraft is getting overpopulated by Minecraft servers, if I would finish my server any time soon. I would proudly post it on here, but will it get enough fame for its potential quality? Afcourse not, everybody updates theirs every day, everyday new servers fill in the lists, and big servers remain big.

The population of servers each claims a part of the community, and good servers who deserve more publicity close their doors as new 1 minute made servers pop up all day long.
But WHY are people making so much servers. Why would they host a server knowing their one of the million other servers trying to do exactly the same?

People want power, they always think they can do better. They see the amazing servers with hundreds of players, and believe they can be as succesful. Some succeed, but many become obstacles and mere props within the server lists.

But how can we stop this? How can we make sure people stop splitting up the community in crumps? We can't, unless someone stands up and makes a large amount of servers into a whole.. But that my friends, is impossible with humans.

This is why I've switch to event servers, it's whitelisted for 6 months and then open for 1 week. Players get a nice break from their normal servers and then return to them after the event is done.

I believe that this scenario for our community is not very much a bad thing, as from my own experience as a server owner and from just reading this blog. In my opinion, even though more and more servers are being created everyday, this in my eyes does NOT look like a problem for anyone. People are generating new ideas for every new server. Sure, lots of servers don't make it even close to becoming popular, but if we stopped server growth then we would be sure to not generate new ideas for communities. Minecraft in a whole is a community built by communities and this is something unique about it. Now your theory with there being so many servers that eventually the community will be entirely split is improbable in my eyes because there will always be those people who don't want to be server owners, those who can't be server owners, and those who are server owners whom play on other server other than their server. I also read on this post how we should connect multiple servers together to form server networks. I would love to do that and i believe that many others would like to as well, but making a server was hard enough for most people and bonding servers together(like Shotbow, Overcast, etc.) is yet another large obstacle of hard work and trust that many seem to not have to aren't willing to give.
In conclusion, I believe that our community will thrive even with so many servers created because it doesn't look like smaller servers will pose a threat to larger ones, and servers with great ideas will create large communities that will thrive within the Minecraft community.

Hahah, I'll never own a server, I just don't see myself as anything more than a simple moderator. Also, why haven't I subbed to you? That is an injustice, I demand for this to be fixed at once!

Look, at the end of the day it's a Minecraft server - It's not a serious life or death situation. It is undeniable that there are a ridiculous amount of servers but if your server is good it will get noticed, if it's bad people will not be interested in it.

You can't really just turn people into numbers and then split them to fit all the servers. That's not how it works. Some players, actually, probably a lot of players, play on multiple servers at once. There are also changes when it comes to activity. You come on a server, stay there 3 days and then leave it because you didn't like it or something. Not to mention that a lot of servers also close. You also shouldn't generalize the whole Minecraft community. We aren't a part of the same society, we don't think the same way and therefore you shouldn't imply that sticking together is the best option. Imagine if we had a single server (or, okay, 200, whatever). The number of "bad" players (cheaters, noobs, trolls) that would run around would be so overwhelming that people would have a mentality that servers are trash and wouldn't want to play.
If the owners of the server want it to grow they'll have to fight for it. That's how it works in real life, bud'. Some of them are lucky and some are just not. Big deal. If you're a person looking for a good server to play on, you can browse through millions of them that might or might not fit your likes. The more the better.

I do agree with this in part, too many people create servers without any real, new idea behind them.

The Server I run (I am speaking through it's account) is a Space RPG server which is unique as there isn't another like it as far as I know. It has lore and a minor storyline with aspects from a prison server (such as buying the next rank up until a point) but me and the other owner started it a year back as we felt that it would offer something new to Minecraft where a lot of aspect were being overdone. This was before Minecraft in Space got more popular and I still haven't seen another server like ours.

We get a good amount of new players every so often and have 10-20 regulars but still, its hard for us to get noticed. Why? Because we struggle to get our name out there and don't want to spam like some do. The only way to find us really is to search for Minecraft Space (or similar) or when we bump the PMC post every so often. We're getting more popular and have a good community, but why should it be that servers which spam can get more people.

I have an ideal shared by the other owner and staff in my server which is as follows: Owners shouldn't see themselves as Gods or themselves as above others as they are simply Minecraft Players like all the people who come on the server and should treat the players with respect as they would want to be treated. I've been on way too many servers where the Staff treat normal players like crap and as you pointed out, a lot of people want power so make servers (which causes this issue). Power corrupts some people and some aren't cut out for it. It's why a lot of servers die (that, or they were started to make money / didn't have an idea of the cost of running a server).

The only issue I have with your post is that you think what you said cannot be stopped. Simply giving unique servers recognition will help them to stand above the 5 minutes work servers and get more players. I might run a server myself, but I sometimes like to check out other servers and would love if there was a way for PMC to show unique servers as opposed to ones which are popular / have a lot of players.

Click on my Name and you will see it listed on PMC :)

I am not here to advertise as I feel that would be immoral so that is why I haven't posted the IP here.

I am not sure what you mean about connecting servers but drop me a message on Notch's Ark (do /mail send redeye3323 your message here)
