Fossils. They were added ages ago, and even so, I have never found one in a proper Survival playthrough. But the neat thing about them is not their rarity… no, it is their connection to lore, and their connection to Minecraft’s most recent Mob Vote winner: The Sniffer.

The Sniffer was added back in 2023, being part of the 1.20 update. It was advertised as this big thing, being a dinosaur from the past! Then it was added to the game, and it was a huge disappointment. The mob is pathetic, being hatched from an egg, giving you 2 seeds, then dying (that last bit isn’t necessary, unless you are a sadist). But the Sniffer IS old, being as old as the fossils, and likely predating Minecraft Legends considering the fact that it doesn’t appear in the game (note that the Torchflower does appear in Minecraft Legends).

Fossils are 8 structures–4 being spines and 4 being skulls. When attached to each other, we get a monster that is huge. 14 metres tall, some. The question is then, can this be an ancient, larger version of the Sniffer? A version so ancient that it is older than the already old “modern” Sniffer?

Yes!

The Sniffer could have been enormous and could have been so large that it was bigger than the Ender Dragon (the largest Minecraft creature). There is a good reason as to why the Sniffer is so small compared to its older cousins, the fossils.

Domestication and natural selection. Ever wondered why bugs and other small creatures are so durable? Or why they are so common? I didn’t until doing research for this theory, where I came upon the idea that they evolved that way. Regardless of if you want to get into the nitty-gritty philosophical stuff about if the theory of evolution is true in the real world, we know the Minecraft world does canonise evolution, and it subscribes to the idea that creatures can evolve or adapt to certain environments. A perfect example could be foxes, which get white fur in tundras to be camouflaged better. Those foxes have adapted to their surroundings.

The world, both the Minecraft world and the real one, loves small creatures. Imagine being a 14 metre tall Sniffer, and trying to navigate a jungle! It would be impossible, you would keep hitting trees with the top of your head and you would die because you’d be hunted in such vulnerable positions. But if you were small, you would be a smaller target and would be able to manoeuvre through the thick tree canopies without bashing your head on the branches! See what I mean? Larger creatures simply die! And, to keep their species intact, the Sniffers evolved to be smaller.

Now to look at domestication: The Sniffer was domestic. We know this from pottery sherds, which can be found in warm ruin waters. The Sniffer was domesticated by Builders, and was kept for its flower-sniffing abilities and possibly as a pet. Why they wanted such an ugly pet is beyond me. I don’t have a clue why, but that does not matter. The point is that they did have it as a pet.

Just like dogs were made smaller, though, when domesticated, the Sniffer also shrunk. It was made this way for many of the same reasons I discussed in the other section about natural selection. It is simply easier to control a smaller pet. You could be crushed by the 14 metre tall creature, but the small 2 metre tall creature is easy to manage. On a more foul side of things, imagine how much poop must have been made by the larger one. LOTS! And it needs to eat to make that poop. In short, bottom line, it is simply more convenient that the Sniffer be small.

But how long did it take for such an evolution to take place? Something I often omit in these blogs is how long the events took to take place. This lore-world does not just happen overnight! No, this process occurred over the course of years, maybe 10,000,000 years! I cannot give you an exact amount of time it took, but it took ages. But this does give us a good explanation of what the Sniffer is, and what the fossils are. This blog was made a lot like Game Theory YT’s new MC theory, but I don’t think the Nether bit is true, so I left that out of my world. I think I’ll be doing a full-on timeline soon, so stay tuned for that, keep on LOOORING and I’ll s’ya nexttime!

Was expecting you to work in Pleistocene megafauna with an analogy of the torchflower as analog to teh avacado…

Probably does more to make the sniffer interseting than the MS/Mj mob 🥂

I never actually thought about that, the fossil structures fitting together. That's awesome!
