Hey Everyone!
I'm going to explain a tutorial on how to get out of a cave system/ravine!
I based my guide on the Create A Survival Guide Blog Contest Goal:
"After a long night of caving, Steve decides he should head back up with his vast pouch of resources. As he crosses a rickety ridge, he falls off the edge and gets knocked out as he hits the floor. When we wakes up, he finds that all of his resources have disappeared apart from a Book and Quill. With no wood or tools to try and escape the cave, he sits down and decides to write a survival guide for other travellers that may stumble upon it, so that they wouldn't make the same mistake as he did." - Goal from the Create A Survival Guide Blog Contest
Tip:
The guide is in spoilers. This is because the blog is lengthy. I wanted the reader to be able to open all the sections he/she wanted to at a time, and not have the whole blog be shown- it can be intimidating sometimes. Thank you!

There are a few different ways to get out of a cave or ravine system. My guide will help you get through either in a few short steps.I based my guide on the Create A Survival Guide Blog Contest Goal:

Survivng Nature's Mines
The Water option will not work if there is NOT an existing water fall down one side of a ravine wall.
The Water
• Look around the cave for a water stream that goes up the whole cave or almost to the top. If you can find this you can just climb up the water by holding your jump button.

• If the water goes almost to the top but not quite, get to the top of the water and start mining out a 2 block hole that you can fit in and then get yourself in the hole.

• To get to the top it will take a little bit longer but you can break the blocks in a staircase form, or you can mine the blocks out above your head.

• Be careful about this because gravel/ sand can fall on you. If you do this make sure you have enough room to step back after the block is broken incase anything falls.
• Once you mine the blocks you take them and place them below you by hitting your jump key and your placing key.

• Once you place as many blocks as you can, dig out a 2 block space in front of you. Keep doing this until you reach the top.

• This ensures that you can move out of the way in case anything falls.

Digging Yourself Out: Pre-steps
Important Pre-steps to keep in mind:
Pre-step 1: Food
• Even though you may not have weapons you can still find food in caves.
• Although it might be gross, rotten flesh is a good source of food.
• Zombies will always spawn in the darkness of the tunnels.
• Remain as far back from the zombie as you can but will still be able to touch him.
• Hit your attack button quickly and don’t stop until he is dead.
• You will get food like rotten flesh, maybe even a carrot or potato. This really does work, just takes a little bit longer to kill without a weapon.
Pre-step 2: Surviving Cave Spiders
• Your journey out of the cave will take you through a mineshaft.
• In mineshafts there are poisonous spiders that can kill you quickly.
• To avoid your death make sure you get blocks like dirt or gravel in your inventory.
• When you come across the spawner block up the front of the entrance to the spawner so that no spiders can come and kill you.
• This could also help as a marker in case you get lost.

Digging Yourself Out: Locating the Mineshaft (Step 1)
• Find a mineshaft. This will be the hardest step because you’ll have to look around. It might take you a short amount of time, or a long time; but you will get there!

• Even though it is the hardest part, it will not be that hard because there are a lot of mineshafts underground.
• To find the mineshaft it will be a little rough, but you might have to break some stone blocks by hand. Yes it will take a little bit longer, but what choice do you have?

Digging Yourself Out: Locating The Materials (Step 2)
• Being lost in a cave/mineshaft/ravine will not be hard at all.

• The only thing we have to look out for are cave spider spawners, which can be avoided by following Pre-step 3.
• Each tunnel in the mineshaft will have some would around the sides.

• The wooden planks and fences should be taken.
• Once you get a few walls cleared you are on your way to getting out! You should have at least 20 planks and fences.

Digging Yourself Out: Crafting (Step 3)
• Now you will be able to craft the materials you collected into your escape equipment.
• Take 4 planks and turn them into a crafting table.

• Once you have your crafting table place it on the ground somewhere where you will know to go back to. It will be kind of like your home base for now.

• Once you have that done, take another 2 planks and make sticks.

• Take the sticks and planks and make 1 wooden pickaxe.

• Once you have the pickaxe you will be able to mine stone for cobblestone.
• Mine about 64 cobblestone.

• You can now dispose of the wooden pickaxe, and upgrade to a stone one.

• After you’re done making stone pickaxes, you need to make one more thing out of stone.
• You should craft a stone sword with 2 cobblestone and 1 stick. This will help you fend off other monsters.

• After this, you can do one of two things: start mining a staircase, digging out of the ceiling, or you can follow the Optional Step 3 iron upgrade.

Digging Yourself Out: Optional Step 3 Iron Upgrade
• After you have your stone weapons you need to build a furnace. You craft it with 8 cobblestone.

• Once the furnace is built, place it on the ground next to your crafting table.

• Put the fences into the furnace as a fuel source so you don’t waste a pickaxe getting coal (unless you want to or already have some). It will most likely take you more then 20 fences, but this will get you started. You can collect more fuel while the iron is smelting.

• In most mineshafts there are a lot of iron on the floor or in the walls, so look around for iron ore.

• Collect a stack of iron or close to a stack.

• It will take 24 iron to make armor
• The fastest way to make armor is this:

• All you have to do is hold shift and right click for all armor except pants. That unfortunately, you have to do seperately.
Pants:

• Or you can craft each item seperately.
Chest:

Helmet:

• 2 iron and 1 stick for 1 iron sword

• 3 iron for 1 iron pickaxe

• Craft 12 iron pickaxes (just to be safe) to get out of the cave.

• Once the furnace is built, place it on the ground next to your crafting table.

Digging Yourself Out: Getting Out (Step 4)
• Once you have armor, zombie flesh, a weapon (optional), and pickaxes you are on your way to making it out of the cave/ravine! There are 2 ways to do this part.
• The first option is a lot quicker, but can be more dangerous. The second option is slower, but safer.
• The first option is a lot quicker, but can be more dangerous. The second option is slower, but safer.
Option 1: Digging Directly Above Yourself
• First, look at the block directly above you.

• You will be digging a hole all the way to the top in this block.

• Make sure you have room around you to quickly move to incase of any falling blocks, lava, or water. This can be nothing more than a block to side step to so you are out of the way from falling blocks. If it is lava it is slower so you can quickly patch it back up and move to a different spot to dig up.

• If it is water and you know you’ll be able to make it without having all your air bubbles disappear, swim up the water to make the process faster.
• Once you’ve dug out blocks as far as you can reach it’s time to climb.
• While jumping place a block directly under yourself and keep doing this until you hit your head on the block above you.

• Look directly in front of you and carve out a 2 block wide hole that you can fit in if blocks fall from above.

• Start mining up again until you can’t reach it. After this you just repeat the process until you hit the top world.

Option 2: Digging A Staircase
• A staircase is a safe way to go, but it uses more pickaxes because you’re digging more blocks.
• To start the staircase, you find a wall.

• Once you’ve found your wall that isn’t filled with lava or water you can start the digging process.
• Look at the wall in front of you. Skip the first block on the wall, then count up 2 blocks.

• Dig out the second and third block.

• Skip the next block back and then carve out the 3 blocks ontop of that one. Keep repeating this as you keep going up the cave and finally you will reach the top of the cave (ground).

• To start the staircase, you find a wall.

YAY! Now Steve can make his way out of the cave and back into his home!
Good luck on your adventures, minecrafters! <3
