That's why we're here! (If it's not, go away) Minecraft was made to enjoy and there are a few rules and/or laws which will keep your enjoyment.

1. The classic rule - never dig straight down (or up). This is for the obvious reason that you may run into lava and you will burn along with your stuff. Or you may dig into a ravine and fall to your death.

2. When building your house, never make it out of and stupid material such as;

Wood
Wooden Planks
Cloth
Leaves
Snow
Glass or the worst
Dirt

Most of these materials present a fire hazard; especially on servers where trolls, griefers or enemies set fire to your home. But also they are not very strong against explosions, leaving you at risk of being blown sky high.
This will very quickly bring an end to your life and that of your possessions.

3. Don't move when fighting a creeper. If you do not move and keep striking them with a sword, they will not explode (so long as you continuously hit them.)

4. Don't ever start a fight with an Iron Golem. It will almost certainly end with your demise.

5. Final rule. If on a PVP or multiplayer survival server, blocking with a sword towards someone means you are a friend or come in peace.

Abide by these rules and your Minecraft will be much more enjoyable.

And why is it bad to build with logs or wood planks? Or wool for that matter?

Creeper explosions are going to damage your house regardless (unless you have an obsidian house). Frankly, I prefer using wool and wood simply because they look a lot better than having a plain cobblestone house. In my experience, creepers and fire aren't really enough of a problem to dissuade me from using them, as they just don't happen that much. But if you're really that worried about them, build walls and keep a bucket of water handy.

I agree that wood and cloth looks better than cobblestone, but if you style it nice and don't over use it, it can be quite nice

Because if you make a house out of wood or wooden planks or any other material that creepers that blow up, creepers may explode it. I think
