Hello. Welcome to my blog post, which aims to provide tips for players who wish to become staff members on servers.

The information was collected from several interviews I was able to have with server owners, and as a result all information is authentic and does in fact represent the opinions of all parties involved.

All of the interviewees have given me explicit permission to use the transcript of our conversations in the making of this post, and If you would like to use some or part of the transcripts, you should contact both the party involved with the transcript and myself to obtain permission to use it. Posting without permission will be considered unoriginal.

With all preliminary matters out of the way, Here are the interview transcripts.

First Interview With TWSSYesterday: Bold - Me; Underline - TWSS

Describe your staff ranks, and their responsibilities.

Chat mod - Keep chat clean. Helper - Help with problems players are having. Mods - Middle man between admins and helpers. Admins - When I'm busy they run the server.

Do you let your players apply for staff, or do you select on your own will?

I select them because that way I get to know them honestly, and so that I can see how they'd deal with situations.

What would you say makes a person a good candidate for staff?

Their politeness, them understanding why things are broken some time, they know who I am and of my public profile, nice characteristics, good at speaking English and other languages with great grammar, helpful in general, and not cocky.

Would you ever consider hiring a player who comes on and immediately asks for a rank?

No.

Would you hire a player who is staff on one or more other servers at the same time?

No, never; must have 100% dedication.

Would you hire a known troll, or hacker on your server, even if they appear to be nice and friendly on your server?

No.

Would being famous on YouTube, a mine craft site, etc., affect a player’s odds of earning a staff rank on your server, even if they are not a good player?

No.

How active do your staff members need to be?

Very active, at least put in 20 hours a week.

If a staff member was not active enough, would you demote them?

Prior to the demotion I would give warnings.

Do you give your staff chances at all, or does one mistake mean the end?

3 chances usually, depending on the thing they did.

Does donating to the server impact a player’s chances of earning staff?

Yes, since it means they are committed to the server and can help, however I wouldn't allow only donators to be staff.

Would you ever make a good staff member co-owner, or something similar, on your server?

No, only 3 people in my entire list of people I know will ever become co-owner(s).

What would influence you to revoke a person’s status as a staff member?

Them not following the rules, the rules are for everyone; not just staff.

What does a staff member need to do in order to be promoted further?

Be a good regular staff member.

Lastly, what advice would you, as a server owner, give to the players out there who want to become a staff member on any server (Not just yours)?

Follow the rules, donate if possible, and hold respect for everyone even if they trash you.

Second Interview with Ledian14- Me - Bold; Ledian - Underlined

 Hello.

Hey.

So I'm here to talk about staff, and what it takes.

Ok.

The first question is, do you like havingmany or few staff members running your server?

Many, around 10.

Do you have several staff ranks?

Yes.

What are they?

Trial-Mod, Mod, Trial-Admin, Admin, Chat-Mod, and Co-Owner.

What general duties are each of these ranks expected to maintain?

Chat mods kick or ban people abusing in chat, mods kick or ban people abusing generally. Trial-mod is the same as mod but slightly less powerful. Admin does the same things as mod, but have access to more commands and plugins. Trial admin is the same, but with slightly less commands. Co owner is the same as me, just for people I know in real life.

What would compel you to hire someone as staff?

If they donate, help people out, are online a lot and are generally fun to be around.

Would you hire someone who is staff on 1 or more other servers at the same time?

Yes.

What would compel you to fire/de-rank a staff member?

Abuse, griefing, etc. Not following the rules, just being staff for the sake of it.

Thanks. That's all I need.

You're welcome.You're

Third Interview with the owners of Potato Server: Potato and BritishTea: Bold - Me; Underlined - Owners

IP: 86.155.35.14 Website: potatoco.enjin.com

Hello, I'll be interviewing you about staff today.
Ok.
The first thing I'd like for you to do is to briefly describe your staff ranks and their responsibilities.
We have ranks like Admin and mod to handle issues in the server.
Do your admins and mods do the same things, or do they handle different areas?
Admins help new players on the server. Our mods help with the less serious issues.
Would you say you hire a lot or a few staff members on your server?
It depends on the amount of players you have on a server. If you have a really small server (Like ours), you don't need a lot of staff.
Do you let your players apply for staff, or do you select on your own will?
I specially select them after I test them with specific scenarios!
What would you say makes a person a good candidate for staff?

I think a good staff member needs to benice and friendly to the players and also they need to be able to manage different issues on the server.

Would you ever consider hiring someone who comes on and immediately asks for a rank?

No, we'd kick or ban someone doing that.

Would you hire a player who is staff on one or more other servers at the same time?

I would hire those kinds of people because it probably means they are good.

Would you hire a known troll, or hacker on your server, even if they appear to be nice and friendly and are doing nothing wrong?

No, I would definitely not hire those kinds of people.

Would being famous on YouTube, a minecraft site, etc., affect a player's odds of being staff?

No, they would be treated like a regular player.

How active do your staff members need to be?

Well they need to be quite active, otherwise there isn't much point in them being staff!

If a staff member was not active enough, would you demote them?

If they make no apearance in like a month or more (without good reason) I would consider it.

Do you give your staff chances at all, or does one mistake mean the end?

I do give them chances, everyone makes mistakes!

Does donating to the server increase a player's odds of earning staff?

Not really in my eyes, donating to a server wouldn't make you a better staff member.

Would you ever make a good staff member co-owner, or something similar?

If there was a REALLY good staff member, I might consider promoting them.

What would influence you to revoke a person's status as a staff member?

If they were not following the rules, and if they weren't doing their job.

What does a staff member need to do in order to be promoted further?

They need to be nice to the other players on the server and do their job REALLY well.

Lastly, what advice would you, as a server owner, give to the players out there who want to become a staff member on any server?

I would tell them to get some practice with people and plugins and to be nice to people; be mature.

That's it. Thanks for your time!

No problem.

Well, now that you've read all that text and interview, let's talk about it. Obviously, tthat's a lot of raw information for you to process, so I've broken the information down so it's easier to understand.

Interview One:

Key  Ideas:
  • Staff is selected by proving you deserve it, not by application.

  • Staff need to be fully dedicated and do their jobs very well.
  • Staff who repeatedly make mistakes will be demoted.
  • Co-Owners are not promoted.
  • Donating will help you get staff, but fame wasn't

Interview Two:

Key Ideas:

  • Donating helps you earn staff
  • You need to work to keep your rank

Inteeview Three:

  • It takes lots of work to earn and keep staff
  • You need to be exceptional to be promoted through the staff ranks

  • You need people skills and plugin skills
  • Not minded as much if you aren't as dedicated

Final Thoughts/Major Summary- Based on all the data collected, I've created a few negeral tips to new players who want to become staff on a server.

  1. NEVER just go on a server and ask for it, you're more likely to be banned immediately than even being considered, no matter how "Qualified" you think you are.
  2. Don't come on and expect to be a co owner right away, for servers that even give you a shot (Some don't) it will take long hours of hard work and practice, as well as being trustworthy and having a vast knowledge of the server.
  3. Donating is not a surefire way to earn staff. Some servers would consider you more, others would not. Obviously, if you are clearly unfit for staff, donating would most likely not improve your odds.
  4. Activity is very important! If you only log on for once a week for an hour, I can pretty much guarantee you'll never be staff. Not all servers have strict guidelines for how active exactly you need to be (One we talked to did; upwards of 20 hours a week.)
  5. Being knowledgeable is a big plus. While experience is often key, some servers want you to be dedicated and as such only be staff on theirs.
  6. Be a problem solver. Player causing trouble but you aren't authorized to ban? Find a way to make sure they stop.
  7. Don't be abusive. You are given power to help, not destroy.
  8. Be callaborative. Working well with other people is good, after all they don't call it a staff "Team" for nothing.
  9. If you happen to be a lucky fellow with many followers or subscribers on YouTube or a popular site, don't expect that to be your ticket to staff, most servers couldn't care less.

Follow these rules, and your reasonable odds of being staff on a server will (Most likely) increase!

*IMPORTANT FOOTNOTE*

The servers being interviewed may or may not be looking for staff members, but just because they were interviewed does not mean they are accepting. Do not go on any of them saying "I saw in the blog post that you needed staff." Because you will be denied. This blog post was intended to be a guide, and by no means claims to be able to tell you exactly how to become staff on any specific server. The information was extracted from real interviews which showcase the opinions of several people, but not everyone out there. All servers are different, and may share few to no similarities with the opinions expressed in this blog.

Thanks for reading my guide!
