Authors Note: I love Doctor Who, it’s amazing. These are just some of the things that have been niggling at me for the past few seasons. I’m happy to answer any questions you have, and I’d love to hear your opinion.
So we saw a few seconds of Peter Capaldi when Matt Smith finished up, but it wasn’t enough to properly give us a look into his character. Here are some things I want to see in the next Doctor/the next Series of Doctor Who.
1.)A more Dignified Doctor.
Capaldi is the first Doctor to be older than his predecessor, which is quite an accomplishment! I want to see a shout back to the older Doctors who, while being zany, were a lot more dignified in their adventures. Matt Smith was a much wackier Doctor, but this has had it’s day. We don’t need another one.
Less of this, Moffatt.
Matt Smith was also wore his heart on his sleeve, and resorted to shouting or brooding when the conversation topic was his own problems; teenage angst. This meant that moments where anger would be used amazingly weren’t as effective because they were watered down from previous hissy fits. Capaldi needs to bring back times when the Doctor never showed emotion except in his weakest moments.
Just look at Tennant... Such performance...
Capaldi needs to be so much more dignified, he is older than any of the Doctors since William Hartnell, the first Doctor himself. He is also plays the Doctor at his oldest thus far, so those two combined should mean an older Doctor.
2.)Better Female Characters.
Let’s face it. Stephen Moffat cannot write female characters. All his characters are sassy, overconfident women who are attracted to the Doctor. Ah, but in the end the Doctor has to save them, doesn’t he? They just can’t seem to stay out of trouble. They need to be much more useful to the Doctor because currently they get in the way.
These women are brought in for sex appeal. Karen Gillan was hired for the sole reason of her appearance. Originally Moffatt thought she was “Wee and dumpy” but after seeing her he had to hire her because she was “5’11” and slim and gorgeous”.
And do we need all of the love stories? They take up too much time. I want a companion like Donna again, one who just wants to see the world and not fall in love with the Doctor. It would be so much more fun and give more time to the story itself.
Those shorts show how strong she is as a woman.
To those people who are inevitably shout at me because all the characters are different, really look at all of them. Look at the basics of the characters. Their key traits. They’ll be roughly the same. Not trying to be sexist here guys...
3.)Less random story arcs getting us nowhere.
There have been so many overarching storylines recently that led nowhere. One of the biggest ones was Clara. What did it accomplish? At times I felt like the Clara story took away from the Doctor having adventures and gallivanting around.
If the storyline is going to be bad, take it away. We don’t need a reason to continue watching the series. We watch it because we enjoy it!
Back to Clara’s storyline, it didn't feel like the Doctor ended up better at the end like he usually does. In fact, they tried to make Clara the reason the Doctor is where he is today. She saved him from messing up all the time, apparently.
4.)Less explosions.
I didn't realize that Michael Bay had started directing Doctor Who. There are too many explosions that aren’t needed these days. It’s becoming too ‘American’ in the sense of the amount of explosions. We don’t need them to enjoy the story. The Doctor isn‘t a fighter, he’s the Doctor. he helps people. Doctor Who is becoming very weaponized as time goes on; even John Hurt told Tennant and Smith that the Sonic Screwdriver wasn’t a weapon.
One good example of an overuse of explosions is the two most recent episodes, the 50th and Matt Smith’s departure in the Christmas special. If we compare Matt Smith’s departure to David Tennant’s departure, we can see how explode-y the series is going; even resurrected The Master didn’t use many explosions, and he shot lightning bolts!
Oh hey look, just one of the many balls of flame around the place!
5.) Creepy episodes, and not just jump scares.
Why do writers feel we need to be scared to enjoy an episode? Look at certain episodes
Why do we need to have jump scares in episodes? Why can’t episodes just be creepy? Two excellent Matt Smith episodes that were creepy are ‘Hide’ and ‘Night Terrors’. These episodes hardly had jump scares and really invoked a sense of uneasiness out of it’s audience.
A few episodes with jump scares are good, but they are becoming more prominent. We need variety.
They terrified me.
6.)The Doctor saves the day, not the other characters.
Too often it’s been the characters of the story that have saved the day. This shouldn't be the case. This should never be the case, with the odd exception of them saving the Doctor and then him saving the day. The show is called Doctor Who. Most people tune in to watch the Doctor save the day from something terrible happening.
Just look at the episode Closing Time. In the end James Corden’s character ends up saving everyone from the Cybermen. It was a good episode, except for this bit. We are then told it was basically love that saved the day.
As if the bromance between them wasn't enough...
7.)New countries.
This is a short one. We have been kept mainly to Europe and pre-Empire State Building America. I would just love to see some new countries introduced; teach the young kids these days a bit about other countries histories.
8.)New recurring characters.
Once again, a short one. I expect this to happen as a character rarely moves from one Doctor to the next. I would like to see some new, interesting characters. Better female characters (Number two) are a necessity.
9.)Better endings.
A lot of Doctor Who stories start out really strong, but have weak endings. The Christmas special just past had Time Lord energy come down to give the Doctor a regeneration. It felt put in there for the pure reason of not thinking of anything better.
I, personally, would have had him regenerate, thinking he was going to die. He would have then woken up and been extremely confused at what had just happened. This would strengthen his need to get Gallifrey back and find out what happened to him. And no, it wouldn't be a bad overarching story line. It would add to the current Gallifrey one. That was just one idea I had.
Another bad ending is the Wedding of River Song. Someone pointed it out to me that the Doctor starts to regenerate in the Impossible Astronaut, and then in the Wedding of River Song we find out that it was a robot all along. So can someone please explain to me how the Robot Imposter Doctor attempted to regenerate?!? Anyone who says it’s a ‘light show’, this is just Moffatt covering his ass because he didn't realize his own mistake.
Clearly Regenerating here.
10.)Less trying to appeal to your markets.
Doctor Who has been trying to appeal to nerds way too much recently. ‘Bow ties are cool’ feels like it was created to be awkward and nerdy, appealing to their main fanbase. The Doctor is an awkward, nerdy, childish, guy. They are trying to cover all the bases to get their fans to like it. This makes the show feel needy. They should be leading a new branch of people, not trying to appeal to many branches.

Thanks,

EDIT: Also, if aliens with lasers and guns and spaceships attacked, wouldn't there be explosions?
His goofiness isn't the Doctor's style, though. He's 1200 years old, he wouldn't act so goofy. Matt Smith was a good choice for a goofy Doctor though. I don't mind co-reliance as long as it's not too heavily imposed in an episode.
Most women, but not all women, would fall for him. Hopefully because Capaldi is older, they'll not fall for him as much. Otherwise it'd seem like they all have daddy issues XD
Matt's anger was awesome, but used too much. If it was used a bit less, I would have been even more impressed.
It wouldn't have to be a new country just make a setting in Cardiff. They do that whenever they go to other worlds. It doesn't have to be the whole country, either.
They'd make more money if they led a new charge of nerds, making new items purely for Doctor Who!
And not every episode has to have lasers XD
To many scary episodes, and explosions... And confusing episodes, can't forget there confusing as confusing gets... [then again, thats time travel for you.]
