This datapack was created for Pleasenotme's Speed-Packing datapack contest. I whipped out this pack in a couple hours (it was painful, so I'll keep this description short). You can craft a sailboat with one white banner and an oak boat in a crafting table. The wind shifts twice each day- one phase is empty, and the rest are in all the four cardinal directions. Your boat, when on water, will automatically blow in this direction when you're not in it. Apart from that, it's a normal boat.

Customization: You can customize the boat in two cool ways- by changing the boat's wood color, and by changing its sail pattern: you can even give the sail a skull-and-crossbones to give yourself some extra pirate clout. To change the boat's color, drop one wood plank of the respective color you want onto the boat; it should change immediately. Right-click on the boat with any banner pattern to change the way the sail looks. Unfortunately, you can't change the base color of the sail or the pattern.

Item Storage: You can actually store a single item by right-clicking it on the mast, then right-clicking again to remove it. Pretty nifty. Just be careful breaking the boat while there's something in storage, because it will get deleted.

WARNING: The boat cannot move with the wind when a player is in it. I know this is basically an essential feature, but Mojang hates boat mechanics, so no matter what I tried, I couldn't get an automatically moving boat. Some day, perhaps I'll be able to finally fix that....

2 Update Logs

Update #2 - Mast Fix : 07/30/2021 10:14:55 amJul 30th

Forgot to include this in the last update...

- The mast now rotates with the boat. If for some reason it's out of line, getting back in the boat should fix it.

Thanks! Personally, not my best, but it's been improved quite a bit since first release

As much as I like the idea, due to the unavoidable bugs mentioned, it is not as immersive as some of the other data packs. As unavoidable as they are, the bugs do hinder the data pack's immersive experience. Additionally, the sailboats aren't particularly useful - they don't actually give much of an advantage. If anything, they make it more of a hassle to maintain the boats. Good job on the effort you've put into this - and keep up the good work.

As uneasy as it makes me to say it, you're right. I was too far into the idea to go back, and when I realized that I couldn't move the player in the boat (my most wanted feature) or even make the sails rotate correctly, I was... needless to say, quite disappointed, but I decided to post it anyway.
Thanks for taking the time to look at it. Hopefully next time I enter a contest I'll actually be ready.

Edit: I fixed those two glaring problems about the sails, though I know it's already too late. Your comment about the boats not being useful... well, I feel the same way. Teleportation, entity motion, effects, blasting with creepers, none of it works for moving the boat while the player's in it, so I can't do anything there. Since I couldn't make the boat useful, I tried to at least make it cool, with what little sailing mechanisms I could implement and some customization options.

I remember I once tried adding sailboats myself (gave up in 5 mins after I discovered the sails problem)

I do have a suggestion though -
  • The player sits in a boat that's in another boat (player sits in top boat)
  • Lower boat moves with wind
  • Lower boat also moves in the direction player is looking, and goes faster if it is in the direction of wind

No joke...

That's exactly what I was already working on

Great minds think alike? Well, maybe I'm not that great of a mind, but I was trying this exact thing already, with the lower boat replaced with an armor stand. So far it's working great, and hopefully I'll be able to release the update soon... if only the contest was a couple days longer XD

You might also try something like an invisible saddled pig in the boat if the boat in a boat idea doesnt pan out. I know doing that tends to break other MC physics...
