This datapack will add weather to deserts. While in a desert when it is raining or thundering in the world, the player will see and hear the effects of a sandstorm. Because this uses predicates to detect biomes, this will only work in 1.15+. It may be possible to make this work in 1.13/1.14 if anyone is interested.

Features:
  • Works with the world's normal weather cycles.
  • "Rain" weather will cause sand particles to appear and wind noise to pick up
  • "Thunder" weather will cause louder wind and limit visibility.
  • Walking "indoors" will cancel the effect (as long as there are blocks above the head).

I am still working on the following:
  • Currently only works in desert biome variants, but this can be expanded to mesa fairly easily (might add an option to do mesa storms as well... using red sand instead?).
  • I would like the sand particles to go slightly sideways instead of downward.
  • Blindness is nice for cutting visibility, but there needs to be a way to adjust it as currently blindness has no value (maybe in 1.17?)
  • Would like better "indoor" detection.

If anyone sees issues or has ideas to fix some of the issues, please let me know. I will keep working on it and try to incorporate the things I am working on and post updates. This should also work on multiplayer worlds, but if it does not, please let me know!

It wouldn't be too hard to add the visibility issues and such on oceans, but i believe rain and thunderstorms happen while in the ocean biome. I'll have to boot up the game to be sure, but I think it does...

It works when the world is all desert, which is what it was originally created for, but it does work as well in a normal world. The sandstorm only rages when you are IN a desert, much like rain only rains in certain biomes.

The only way to get this working in 1.14 would be to remove the biome detection and make it work all over. So if you have a desert only world, then it wouldn't be too bad... I am using predicates to detect desert and desert-like biomes and those are only available in 1.15+

It should be active by default once installed. If you are asking how to install a datapack, you should be able to just drop it into the datapacks folder of your world save and next time you load or /reload your game, it should be there.

If you want to activate/deactivate it, just type /reload to see the menu or /function sandstorm:options

The sandstorm will only show up when you are in a desert environment and only when the game's weather is raining or thundering (/weather rain)

This is a cool addition to weathers in Minecraft. Maybe you can change the category/source of the sound to weather instead of hostile.

playsound entity.horse.breathe weather @a ~ ~ ~ 9 0 1

In this case, they can decrease the volume of weather in Music & Sounds option if they find it pretty loud.

What kind of feedback are you wanting? It isn't running via command blocks that would normally spam you with run messages. Everything is done behind the scenes with functions so that it WON'T spam you with those messages.

Also remember this currently only works in deserts (not desert variants), and will activate when the world is raining or storming.

I already changed it to desert hills for my world, the only thing that lags extremely is the chat. when I use /difficulty the difficulty will appear with a 3 min delay. Idk if its a problem with my world or if the datapack is too "memory-consuming". It can't be a problem with my pc.....maybe just a problem with my world

I added an option to enable and disable the pack. Can you see if it only lags like that while it is storming or all the time? Also if you disable the pack and it is storming is it still lagging. If it lags only when the pack is on and it is storming, then your pc cannot handle the particle effects. If it lags when the pack is off or not running (like clear weather) then it must be something else.

Try downloading the new version and test it out with the pack enabled/disabled as well as rain/clear weather modes and let me know.

The data pack is doing almost nothing unless it is actively making the sandstorm on your screen. If it is lagging at that point, then it is likely due to the particle effects generated during the storm. If you are lagging when there isn't a sandstorm it is likely something in your world. Do you have other datapacks installed?

Hmmm. It appears the sandstorms only work in the literal minecraft:desert biome and not other desert biomes like minecraft:desert_hills. This causes it to start and stop as you're running across the biome because you're leaving and entering the actual minecraft:desert biome. Thunderstorms seem to have the same issue.

Besides this issue, it seems like an interesting pack. I'm curious how it'll progress.

Yeah, I mentioned that. I had designed it to work on my desert only biome world, so it works perfectly there. It would not be hard to expand this to work in the other biomes and I plan to do that at some point. The desert hills would obviously be a first choice, but what about the desert lakes? There is water there so it might not be as appropriate... Also thinking about the mesa varieties as well.

So cool! I've been looking for something like this for a while.

Haven't downloaded it yet, but Swifter has a simple datapack on temperature that utilizes detection of whether or not a player is indoors, maybe it'll help: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VeVt43zzDkM

Best of luck!

That datapack is insanely complicated... I might have to take some ideas from it, but unfortunately "indoors" for him is just does the 20 blocks above your head match either air or water, so a single block above your head means indoors. I can't imagine this working too well on smaller resource systems as the amount of stuff this guy is tracking and such is crazy!

But... cool datapack! Definitely worth a -30 temp! hehe

This is pretty cool. It's almost like the sandstorm event in Terraria, except it doesn't have special enemies. Still pretty neat.
