The elytra was a revolutionary addition to the game, but how about another travel option. Upgrade your horse's speed and jump with this new kind of horse armor.
Where do I get it?
The Hoghide Horse Armor can be found in bastion stables. Finding a specific variant of bastion is difficult, but expect to walk out with maybe 4 or 5 of this item. Each one will have one random armor enchantment (only enchantments that would work on a chestplate).
What does it do?
It multiplies your horse's jump height and speed. The better the horse, the better it works.
Feedback
Looking for feedback on the speed upgrade. I have to consider the maintenance of using a mount, the new 1.18 terrain, how it compares to other forms of transportation, when its introduced into the game, etc. Also curious when people tend to find it. It varies how long it could be before a bastion stable is discovered. Could be before or after people get elytra.

I do remember seeing something interesting on the minecraft feedback website about changing how crits work on horseback. I could potentially make a lance that gains a high level of knockback that wouldn't normally be possible, but only while riding a horse and the level of knockback could relate to how fast your moving.
I think there's still potential here for transportation. Balancing is a bit difficult though when considering how good it can be on the nether roof. The elytra is extremely versatile and mounts are less adaptive to the terrain. This lack of adaptivity provides the room to make it faster than the elytra, but only within its limited range of usefulness. Its also worth considering you don't need rockets and horse armor doesn't have durability. Sadly fall damage for horses doesn't scale with their jump height so I'm limited in how much I can buff jump height for dealing with forests if I want to keep the pack just a loot table so there's no performance impact.

I'm going to be brutally honest here, I think you'll find that this data pack makes horses move and jump with (in my opinion) *too* much power to be survival friendly, and that's a shame.
I imagine if you changed the increases to between +5-20% speed, maybe +20-30% jump, you might find a lot more people will be keen on it because it doesn't disrupt survival play too much, while still making horses more useful.
It would also be really cool to see a tier system with the armors. Maybe iron horse armor lets the horse move faster while gold lets it jump higher ? That could be a cool way to balance out diamond horse armor which isn't really that rare or difficult to acquire so long as you raid a nether fortress or two.
Anyway, if you were planning on developing this idea further I'd be keen to see where it goes! Diamond'd!
